Hi-Lites week of Sept. 3, 2015

What a nice start.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Thank you for helping us have such a wonderful start. I was so impressed with how quickly students and teachers got down to business. Our 33 new students in Grades 1-8 and our 46 new kindergartners seemed to waltz in and feel right at home. We are delighted to have them here. What a tremendous opportunity to make new friends!

This weekend will be a four-day break and classes will resume after Labor Day. I hope everyone enjoys the end to one of the nicest summers I can recall.

End-of-the Day Messages

In order to capture another twenty minutes of instruction time, we have eliminated end-of-the-day announcements. If parents/guardians need to leave a message for a student, please contact school before 2 p.m. at 651-690-2477. Three volunteer 8th graders deliver all messages to the classrooms at 2:30 p.m. We have attached clip hooks outside all door frames. It has made for a very calm ending. Please help your child make all plans before they leave your house in the morning. Thanks for your help with this.

Math Coaches Needed...We Want You! We Really Do!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Highland Catholic School provides an opportunity for students to participate in extracurricular math teams in grades 5-8. These teams are designed for students who love math and an extra challenge. In order to provide this opportunity, we need a few parents who are willing to be math coaches. All materials are provided and meetings can be scheduled to work for you--before school, after school, evenings--whatever works best for you!

Fifth and sixth grade students participate in Math Masters. They work on a variety of problems and fact drills. There is a competition against area teams in March for grade 6 and April for grade 5. Seventh and eighth grade students participate in Junior High Math League which has six competitions from late September to January against several area schools. The top five students then are invited to participate in Math Counts competition in spring.

If you are interested or have questions, please contact me at c.broadnax@highlandcatholic.org.

Homework Club Grades 5-8

Dear Parents and Guardians in Grades 5-8,

Our popular and helpful Homework Club begins Tuesday, Sept. 8th.

Homework Club is available for all students in Grades 5-8 from 3-4 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. Homework Club is supervised by teachers. Students are allowed to bring a healthy snack and drink. Students may not leave the building and return to Homework Club.

Students may attend every day or specific days that you have designated. They sign in at the start of Homework Club. Punch cards are available through the Office or students may pay two dollars in cash. Students must have a punch card or cash in hand to participate.

Students find Homework Club an excellent way to get a jump on their assignments and it also helps fill the gap between dismissal and 4:00 p.m. practices/games.

Check it out.
