The Importance of Good Digital Citizenship
A digital citizen is someone who uses technology responsibly to learn, create, and participate.
With distance learning officially kicking off this week for all CVUSD TK-12 students - now is a great time to speak with children about how they can practice good digital citizenship as they engage with their learning on new technology, and through new communication touchpoints.
Rule #1 - be respectful! Students should treat their virtual classroom, and peers with the same respect they would in their traditional classroom.
Rule #2 - encourage positive behavior! To be safe online, and to create safe spaces for others online, students as digital citizens should be inclusive, informed, engaged, balanced, and alert.
Rules #3 - be kind, be courageous - be an upstander! Students should support their peers online. Students should not engage in online applications with the intent to intimidate, harm, or upset others.
These rules to promote positive digital citizenship are in line with the District’s “Using Technology in School Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for Students.”
Let’s continue to work together to support our students with the tools, information, and best practices that will help them be successful. Distance learning is new for all of us! Our dedicated teachers, administrators, and school site teams have been working diligently to engage in distance learning with our students. We are so grateful for their hard work. Students are at the center of everything we do, and we remain positive, and mindful of the unique challenges ahead.
Zoom Tips & Best Practices
Zoom has been a popular way to connect virtually, and is a resource many CVUSD teachers are using for distance learning. We have been advised to take a few precautions to ensure our Zoom meetings are a safe form of communication between us and our students, and to avoid inappropriate use. Our meeting ID’s will never be listed publicly. Please do not share our Zoom meeting ID on social media or any public outlet. The ID is the only way in, if we keep the ID private, others cannot join. Also, there is a Zoom feature called the “waiting room” which teachers are being encouraged to use. The waiting room allows teachers to see who is trying to join. As teachers see and ensure the students are in their class, they will let them in one at a time. Teachers will also be utilizing some of the controls such as muting the students when they join and will be disabling chat between the students. More tips for using Zoom are available here.
The Westlake High School Science Department and teachers support Los Robles Medical Center by donating their lab & dissection gloves. Thank you medical professionals for your service!
Congratulations Kristen Maturo – CVUSD’s May Teacher of the Month!
Mrs. Maturo is not the loudest, nor the most vocal person on campus. She leads with a quiet optimism, which grants her much respect amongst students and staff. In addition, she embraces challenges while remaining positive, and initiating a problem-solving attitude. Mrs. Maturo is always thinking about what is best for her students and the school. Congratulations Mrs. Maturo! Read more here
