La Center United Meeting

Community Forum

On January 9th, 2020 the La center united coalition hosted their first meeting of the new calendar year. The goal of this meeting was to offer an opportunity for community organizations and individuals to come together share their opportunities and services. This newsletter is a resource guide to the la center community.

La Center United

  • Teen center, Wednesday 3:00-5:00 Teen center
  • General meetings 2nd Thursday of the month 5:30-7

Gather and Feast Farms

o 2 years in La Center

o Farming organics

o Educating on local farms

o Team building events & company picnics

o Farm fest- Late Summer

o Trying to preserve local farms

o Company picnics

o FARM FEST – open house, dinner, educational tour

o Summer Camp – may not continue?


9 on board—no more titles, except Treasurer

Group of parents to provide low cost or free events (I.e. picnic and food, movie night) along with fund-raisers. Made $15K from holiday shop.

Paying for overdue lunch balances

Clothing drive (gloves, hats, etc.)

Counselors, Department gift card to buy for class supplies

Funds help support:

  • Senior Walk
  • Blanket Drive
  • Creature Crawl
  • Father / Daughter
  • Bingo

Meeting Thursday nights at 7PM, Quarterly now

LEO Club

WHO: high school club with focus on community service- youth version of lion’s club


· Fall celebration with volunteers

· Stuff Easter Eggs

· Clean Cemetery for Memorial Day

· Assist with Easter egg event

· Beach clean up

· Other events when needed

· Care closet maintenance

NEED – how to get students to volunteer—need more.

  • Suggestion—hold one meeting at Middle School with HS students mentoring ES. Paula needs sponsor/teacher from middle school to assist. (M. Flatt will check on contact)

When: Meets Monday 3-4pm in high school shop class- open to high school students only

Boy Scouts Troop 484

  • Provide outdoor experiences, youth leadership training, citizen development, life skills

  • Connect youth to community

    • Services where needed

    • Eagle Scout Projects

When: Meets Monday Nights 6:30 pm at highland Lutheran church


  • Merit badge counselors- specific skill areas- speak with scouts about the topic

  • Materials & Support for eagle Projects, materials for projects,

  • Big Events/fund raisers

  • Donations:

    • Camping equipment

    • $ for activities, camp, uniforms

    • Decorations materials for ule logs

  • Service Project Hours/activities

  • Suggestion – search and rescue teams might be able to assist as merit counselors

La Center Library

· Support Students Success through early literacy sand lifelong learning

· Build connected community

They Provide:

· Volunteer opportunities

· Meeting Place

· Community Resources

· Outreach to schools and preschools

· Resource Skills


· The Friends of the La Center library meet 1st Wednesday of the month at the library- 6:30pm

· Summer Reading

· Bookmark contest

· Provide programs

· Center piece class

· Book sales / big tent

· Events


- New Members for the friend of the Library Group

- Getting word out about Library Activities


- Have online calendar, website, posted

La Center Lions Club

  • 36 years in community

  • Service Organization / international club too (very large)—created by zones

  • LC has 40 members (average 15-20 / meeting)

  • Service Organization- focus on Hearing, sight, diabetes, disaster community needs

  • Mission is “we serve”

    • Walk & knock- first Saturday in Dec.

    • Easter Egg Hunt & Breakfast- Saturday before Easter-4/11/2020

    • Chain gang for H.S.-Fall 35 years

    • Food baskets

    • Football games

    • Health screening-sight & hearing- Nov.

    • Sponsor Leos

    • Fun 5k run/walk (back pack programs)

    • Eyeglass & hearing aid recycling

    • Holiday Bazar

    • La Center High School Scholarships


  • 1st & 3rd Thursday @ La Center Middle school Cafe-7pm


  • more members, both volunteer and participants; some events are more popular with respect to volunteers than others.

  • Input from community about how Lions can help.

  • We are here today, can help each other communicate events… Call for events (from LCU).

Parent Volunteer

Attend PTO meetings – member for about 7 years

Attend LCU meetings—member for about 3 years

Suggestion – internet is not the only way; posters maybe better for those not on the internet all day.
