New voice in the office

We are excited to announce that Mrs. Sheila Poppen had a baby boy on Monday, January 12th! His name is John Anthony and they are both doing very well. While Mrs. Poppen is on maternity leave, Mrs. LaVonne Bohn will be the school secretary. Mrs. Bohn has been the substitute secretary in the past and we are very grateful to have her join us again! She can be reached either by phone or email with any messages.

Classes are learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. Mrs. Jeffery's first grade students wrote their own "I have a dream" speeches. Check out the pictures below!

4th & 5th Graders to Sing National Anthem

Thursday, Jan. 22nd, 6:30pm

405 3rd Street Southwest

De Smet, SD

Mrs. Larsen will be directing 4th and 5th grade students in the singing of the National Anthem at the DHS basketball game on Thursday, January 22. The event will be broadcast on Just search for De Smet High School (South Dakota) and click on the basketball game to watch live from your home.

Snowshoeing Fun

We have had a terrific time snowshoeing after school! The pictures above are from the 2nd & 3rd grade session and the pictures below are the 4th & 5th grade students. We had over 50 kindergarten and 1st grade students sign up for snowshoeing next week so we are going to have to split into two groups. 1st grade students will still have the class after school on Tuesday, January 20. However, kindergarten students will now have snowshoeing on Thursday, January 22nd. I apologize for the change in plans but this will allow for a better experience for all of the students. (Let Mrs. Abi know if the new date does not work for your family.)

The activity will take place 3:20-4:45 on the west playground and in Washington Park.

If your child has been given antibiotics by a doctor, they should not return to school until the medication has been in their system a full 24 hours.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to help prevent the spread of viruses.

Don’t share food, utensils, beverages or anything that might be contaminated with germs.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

Stay home when sick, especially with flu‐like symptoms of fever and cough. Stay home for at least 24 hours after being fever free without the use of fever reducing medicine.
