Principal's Message

Kia ora Whaanau,

Thank you to those who attended our annual Mataariki evening celebrating maaori success. It was so good to see everyone there and showing pride for our student’s accomplishments. Congratulations to everyone who received an award. Also thank you to the staff and community members for their time and energy in organising the evening. Thank you to OSPA for lending us your boards. It was an awesome night.

From Term 3 home learning will only be able to be used as part of a ‘return to full attendance plan’ which is created as a partnership between the school and the whaanau and meets the criteria set by the Ministry of Education. If you or your child have concerns about attending school please contact the Deputy Principal for the child’s year level. The only other time is when the school is required to have students home due to COVID or health and safety due to staffing. Advice from the Ministry of Education is that students should be attending school regularly on site.

On Thursday 7th July at 6:30 at Te Kotahitanga Marae we are holding a hui to review the maori education plan. We would like to encourage whaanau to come along and join us. A light supper will be provided and children are welcome.

This week on Thursday our Year 10’s will help plant 75 fruit trees in the Onewhero Domain as part of our community partnership. This is a great way for these students to show our school value of Whanaungatanga.

Next week is the last week of the term, so enjoy the holiday break and we will see you all next term.

Ngaa mihi,

BOT Update from the Arts Department Report

Every month the BOT receives a report from a department within the school for feedback on what has gone well, or not so well, provide updates on the curriculum and talks to how we could align resources. We were incredibly impressed with the effort that went into the arts department report, which is led by Charles Jordan and wanted to share some of the insights with the community.

Highlights for the Board were how programs recognised our diversity and reflected our uniqueness through the wide array of arts mediums that our students have access too. It was great to hear about the success and pleasing NCEA results our students achieved last year and the incredible efforts our arts Kaiako (teachers) go to, to ensure access to resources and ultimately successful work. They open the doors at lunchtimes for seniors to practice, provide weekly night classes, after-school music programs and holiday workshops, to support our seniors to be their best.

Within the wider school it was exciting to hear about the specialist music programme being implemented with new music teacher Lisa McLeod working with years 1-6, creating lots of future drummers. And work has started integrating student agency, positive teaching programs, tikanga Māori and Mātauranga of our local history, mythology, and whakapapa, into our arts curriculum.

The art department also provides an after-school drama club, creating the backdrop to the Arts and Culture evening, and facilitates work that the year 8's put into creating the OAS Christmas parade float each year.

Some budget requests that have recently been approved by the board were well received. The portable extension to the school stage will be a great asset, allowing flexibility and modernising our stage set up and safety.

Overall, we hope that our students, Whānau and wider community can see what a fantastic department we have, and a real asset to Onewhero Area School.
