Christmas in Sweden

The celebrations in Sweden are started in 13th December with the day of Lucia, which is the biggest night of the year.

  • In every house Lucia (the princess of the light) is the biggest daughter in the family. She wears a long white dress and a crown with waxes in her hair. Her parents are waked up by their daughter, a traditional Italian song is sung by her and coffee with pretzels is given to them.
  • Traditional dishes such as ham, jelly from pigs and rice porridge are served in the Christmas table.
  • After the meal the presents, which are under the Christmas tree, are opened by everyone. The gifts are brought by Jultomten, an elf who lives in the attic.

The celebrations in Sweden are finished in 13th January.
