The Opportunity of Design Thinking
The design process provides a unique pathway for addressing issues that face human beings in an innovative and creative way. It’s that simple. Use design to change your school, change what you do as an educator, change what students do, or, change the world.
The opportunity to learn design
This pre-conference is an opportunity to ramp-up your design skills in a single day. Whether you are a beginner or have experience with design, the pre-conference event will provide a relevant and authentic opportunity to develop or deepen design skills.
What is it?
A full-day immersion experience where you will learn design by doing design.
We’ll be conducting this opportunity in partnership with Prepartoria Alfa Fundacion of Monterrey. The school provides a unique high school education, offering a tuition-free experience to students from low-income families in Monterrey. We’ll spend the day at the school, interacting with teachers and students, and responding to design challenges that help improve the lives of students.
What will you learn?
Learn design. Learn the process and how to frame provocations. Learn how design can be used for organizational change or as an instructional pathway. Learn how design functions as a mindset and lens for innovation. Learn how design supports the exploration of passions by students. Understand how empathy drives design. Learn ethnographic strategies for collecting human-centered data. Learn strategies for ideation, for prototyping and testing. Learn about the role of iteration in design. Most importantly, learn about a process that has implications for improving the condition of human beings.
Who should attend?
Individuals and groups from schools who wish to understand how the process of design thinking can support their practice. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to explore, to challenge yourself, and begin developing a “design mind” that sees the world and its challenges as opportunities. We’re interested in helping you develop a new lens to see world through.
The Upshot: The Tri-Association Design Institute
What would happen if we could assemble educator-designers from the schools that the Tri-Association serves to create the greatest opportunities for students and their school communities? What would be the possibilities? At the Tri-Association meeting in September, 2018 in the Dominican Republic, we’ll be launching a full-scale design experience for member schools through the new Tri-Association Design Institute!
