CALVIN PARK UPDATE
Week of November 30-December 4, 2020
December is here! We are very grateful to the KFLA Public Health Unit for their outstanding efforts to monitor and control the spread of Covid-19 in our local community. We are also thankful for our students, families and community for following the recommended health protocols, including daily screening for symptoms of Covid 19, so that we can continue to learn together at school.
This month, we will be focusing on gratitude and we have several different initiatives that our school will be involved with. Research has revealed that the practice of gratitude improves physical and mental health, by helping us to focus on and appreciate what we have and who we have in our lives. This year has been challenging but we are also grateful for many things and one of the best ways to show our gratitude is by giving back. We have asked our students to bring in small decorations that represent themselves to hang on our gratitude tree in our front hall. Throughout this month, students will also be writing their own messages of gratitude to decorate the tree and the front hall.
We will be collecting donations for our local food bank between December 1 - 11th. Students can place their donations in the boxes under our gratitude tree in the front hall and then the items will be "quarantined" before they are delivered to the food bank. The items that are most needed include:
- Canned meat & fish
- Peanut butter, jam
- Stews, canned tomatoes
- Baby food, formula, diapers
- Pasta, pasta sauce
- Cereal
- 100% Fruit Juice
We also have a hat and mitten clothesline in our front hall. We will be collecting donations of new hats or mittens to hang on the line. Some of these items are given to students who need them at our school and others are donated to students in our community at our feeder schools.
Another initiative that some of our classes are involved in is writing holiday greetings to members of the Canadian Armed Forces who are serving abroad. Some classes have already begun making cards and writing letters.
A reminder that the Calvin Park School Council has organized a fundraiser through FlipGive and Indigo. Find out in the School Council section of the newsletter how you can help to support the purchase of new diverse books for our classroom libraries.

SCHOOL COUNCIL FUNDRAISER
The Calvin Park School Council is inviting you to join our campaign to raise funds to purchase print material to diversify each classroom library. Calvin Park wants to ensure that all students value diversity, demonstrate respect for others and see themselves reflected in the reading material accessible to them in their school.
You can get involved by donating books or providing the school with book title suggestions that emphasize equity, inclusion and diversity, such as books with main characters from different racial backgrounds or LBGTQ2+ youth. You may also choose to offer a monetary donation to go towards purchasing new books.
We are also running two fundraisers, one through Indigo Books and another through Flipgive.
How does it work?
Purchase through Indigo online or FlipGive and the school will receive cash back with every purchase. For example, through Indigo online, if you purchase Indigo gift cards, the school receives 15% of the value of your gift card. Through FlipGive, shop online at many retailers and the school receives a percentage of the value of your purchase.
Buy groceries, shop on Amazon, buy gifts for the holidays - all of your usual shopping - and the school will receive cash back at no additional cost!

GRADE 8 - 9 TRANSITION INFORMATION
At Calvin Park, our Grade 8 students will have the opportunity to learn more about LDSB secondary schools through virtual presentations in their classrooms from the Student Success Teams at each high school. Some Secondary Schools are also organizing virtual Grade 9 Information Nights for students and parents/guardians. Students will be automatically transferred to their home secondary school based on their current home elementary school. You can locate your child’s home secondary school by going to https://triboard.mybusplanner.ca/Eligibility and enter your home address under the School Eligibility tab.
Our students will be guided through course selection and registration through the online tool, "myBlueprint." Many of our students are already familiar with this tool and can login at home to look at their account. Students who are currently remote learning will be receiving a letter from their virtual classroom teacher that outlines the transition process in the Virtual Elementary School. Families can visit the website of each secondary school for more information! Grade 8-9 transition information will also posted on the Calvin Park Website under the "NEWS" tab.

WINTER WEATHER REMINDERS
- Winter weather is coming! Please make sure that students are dressed appropriately for cold, wet weather. In addition, boots and splash pants/snow pants are recommended because the yards are getting muddy and wet.
- As the weather gets colder, students will begin using the gym more frequently for physical education classes. Students will need clean INDOOR SHOES to wear in the gym.
- As the weather gets colder, students will likely need multiple masks with them each day - we are already noticing that the masks get soiled and wet when we come inside after outdoor activities. In addition, students are required to wear a mask during physical education activities in the gym so they will likely need a clean mask at the end of indoor phys ed class. The Health Unit recommends that clean masks be stored in clean plastic bags or a clean container with a lid. Cloth masks should be washed each evening.
