Reading With Pride
News for the Month of October 2012
The The Hazel Hainsworth Young Library at Jack Yates High School is teeming with excitement! Last month, saw the kicked-off of the new Name That Book (NTB) & Young Adult Literacy League (YALL) with six students. Yates students also participated in HISD’s annual Millionaire Club Summer Reading Recognition with ten students being invited to a VIP luncheon.
There's a plethora of events and activities for October. For Hispanic Heritage Month there is loteria, a “Feed Your Brain” literature display, and a trivia contest. The library also recognizes Banned Books Week. As a citadel of information, our library supports everyone’s freedom to read. A book display, a kiosk presentation, and a Twitter contest draw attention to the problem of censorship. In 2009, President Obama proclaimed October as National Literacy Month! We are collaborating with the Houston Public Library in their October Gulf Coast Reads activities. Some of Ms. Payne’s students and NTB members will attend a field trip to view this year’s city-wide read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. We are also hosting a public library card drive. Our school library program also participates in National Teen Read Week. The October 15-19 activities consist of: Volki Book Talks; Field Trip/Movie; Student/Staff Poll; Twitter Contest; NTB Presentation and a October 13 lunch with Principal Sheppard. Students and staff can also stop by to see our “Real Lions Wear Pink” display for a list of our library’s resources about breast cancer awareness.
Last, but not least, our library will participate in the homecoming parade and festival and so very proud to call Savannah Sargent our YALL homecoming and sweetheart! Congratulations to Margarita and Marquis! There is a Miss Yates and Mr. Yates coronation display in the library.
