Annual Terry Fox Walk - September 28, 2017
by Kiyana A. and Cailey F.
Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg but was raised in Port Coquitlam. Terry was a very active teenager who loved sports and was a part of a basketball team in grade eleven. When Terry was eighteen he was diagnosed with bone cancer in his right leg. In order to prevent the cancer from spreading to the other parts of his body the doctors had to amputate his leg, below his knee. When he was in the hospital, Terry would feel sorry for other patients with cancer; most of them children. So he came up with the idea of the Terry Fox run. He would walk across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
When Terry started his run not a lot of people knew about him or what he was trying to do. There was very little technology back then and only very very important news got on T.V. Eventually word got around because the community was small and Terry’s support team got larger and larger. More and more people knew about him and what he was trying to do. When people would hear that Terry was coming to their area they would get out on the side of the road waiting with their donations and some would just cheer him on. But Terry also received negative comments from people who were driving and people who walked too. Some would say "Get off the road you maniac!" or other rude things. The more Terry did, the more people knew about him. By the time he reached Ontario he was very popular and due to nearly being hit by cars or buses he started to be accompanied by police cars to protect him.
Unfortunately, Terry had to end his journey on September 1st,1980 because the cancer had spread to his lungs. He ran for 143 days and covered 5,373 km. Terry died a month before his 23rd birthday. Today we raise money in his honor and to help people around the world who suffer from cancer.
On September 28th, CVPS and TPPS walked together around the school. Since the opening of Countryside Village Public School, we have raised over seven thousand dollars on our Terry Fox runs. Thank you for all your generosity.
Volleyball Team
Do you have a passion for volleyball? Junior volleyball tryouts are coming up so be sure to listen to announcements. It is also a great oppotunity for you to represent your school. Only grade 4 and 5 students will be able to participate. The hosting school for this tournament will be Louise Arbour S.S. and will be held November 30th 2017. The teachers coaching this volleyball team are Mrs. Malik and Mrs. Judd.
Nature Hike
Grade 7 students got real life examples of decomposers and took pictures of the bog which kicked off a water cleaning experiment and story writing back in class.
Grade 3 students are planning to write about their hike and discuss the soil and plants they observed throughout the day.
Below are some pictures of our wonderful day.
Walking on the trails.

Fall Tips
by Jasmine G. and Ravneet K.
Play Outdoors
Going for a bike ride or setting up a game of sports in the park are two great ways to stay active and healthy during fall. The weather is perfect for exercise, as it is not too hot or cold and prevents you from becoming dangerously dehydrated or prone to injury.
Stay warm
Be prepared for cold weather.
Exposure to cold temperatures, whether indoors or outdoors, can cause serious or life threatening health problems, and since the weather is getting colder as we approach winter, make sure to bundle up!
Watch a movie
Watching a movie is a a great way to spend time with your family. The best seller book WONDER is being turned into a movie which you can watch this November!
Read!
Reading a book is also a great way to spend your time during fall as it can be cold outside. So if watching a movie isn't for you, reading is! Students should read a minimum of 15 minutes every day. You can check out the Scholastic book orders from your teachers if you're looking for books to add to your collection.

High School Uncertainties
By: Israa G. & Madeleine K.
The grade 8’s at our school are currently preparing for high school. Believe it or not, it is a difficult time for us students, due to the fact that the decisions we make will greatly impact our future. With our choices heavily influencing our high school careers, we grew curious about many aspects of secondary school. To answer those questions, we went to our guidance counsellor, Ms.Torresan, to answer our many concerns. Below is a recording of our interview with her. Hopefully these answers help your child with his/her high school decision making.
Here is a website you can go to if your questions were not answered:

Help your teen plan for Grade 9 course selections for 2017-18
Soon, current grade 8 students will select their courses for grade 9. Before they do, we want to ensure that they have the opportunity to consult with their teachers, guidance counsellor, if applicable, and their parents.
As our partners, families are encouraged to help prepare their teens for course selection. We encourage you to become familiar with the process by creating a myBlueprint account. Every parent and student (grades 7-12) can have access to myBlueprint features such as:
High School – plan courses, track progress toward graduation, and instantly identify post-secondary eligibility for opportunities in every pathway
Post-Secondary– compare detailed information on apprenticeships, college programs, university programs and workplace sectors
Who Am I – complete surveys (including Learning Styles, Myers-Briggs Personality, Holland Interests, Knowledge, Motivations, and Compatibility)
Portfolios – create several portfolios (e.g. Career Portfolio) and share them with parents, teachers, or future employers. It’s simple to add work you have completed in myBlueprint or add pictures and videos
Job Search – find real-world job and volunteering postings that relate to occupations of interest
Goals – add interactive SMART goals and action plans
Resumes & Cover Letters – record experiences, build a resume, write a cover letter
Occupations – compare comprehensive information on occupations
Money – build a budget to track income and expenses
Additionally, parents/guardians and students can review the Chart Your Course document , Peel District School Board’s common course calendar (found at www.makingmyway.ca). This guide will help you understand the course selection process and provide information on the courses and programs offered in Peel secondary schools.
The grade 9 course selection process will be open from Nov. 14 to Dec. 2, 2016. If you have questions or are looking for course suggestions, please contact your teen’s teachers or guidance counselor.
