Toy Drive by the Online Learning Department

The Online Learning Department got together to gather toys for the Toys for Tots Drive. The team was honored to be able to help the Aldine community through this drive. These toys will be distributed to kids in need before the Christmas Holidays.

Getting to Know the Department

Milton Velez (Online Learning Lab Teacher at Nimitz High School)

I’m Milton Velez and I work in the Online Learning Lab at Nimitz Senior High. I’ve worked for Aldine for five and a half years. I began working in education in 2010. I left Corporate America to pursue a more balanced work-life schedule. I was originally hired to work in the Online Learning Lab by Raylene Truxton and I was trained by The Veronica Johnson (a phenomenal educator and human being). The Online Learning Lab was like a roller-coaster ride, but-even better.

I was able to build rapport with young adults in the Online Learning Lab and the day-to-day human interaction with at-risk students was rewarding and thrilling. I was able to help people who have experienced failure. I was able to assist students through a very difficult point in their lives when they did not know if they had the energy left in themselves in order to persevere. Helping students in a way that means they have better opportunities is the reason why I enjoy this department and what I do.

Unfortunately, my roller-coaster ride in the Online Learning Department was short-lived because of funding. Therefore, I was transferred to the Special Education Department. Special Education allowed me the opportunity to develop and grow in a truly special way. For example, I was able to support, facilitate, and co-teach in a variety of settings ranging from English IA to Algebra IIB (and every subject imaginable in between). It was a rough two years, but, I was thankful for a job.

The opportunity to work with a multitude of teachers, cross-curriculum, prepared me when a position opened up in the Online Learning Lab. I rejoined the Online Learning Department in 2012. I’m proud to be part of something great! The investment in young adults is very cumbersome, but the return on that investment is priceless.

Virtual School Updates

In order to better serve our Virtual School (VS) students, the VS teachers have created a schedule to meet with individual students.

Please provide the virtual school conference schedule below to all Virtual School IC Students. It is critical that you review this information with the students. Spreadsheets

Thank you for all the lab teachers who have updated their spreadsheets. Remember that your SLOs are now linked to the data on your spreadsheets, so it is vital that you update them weekly.

There have been several teachers who have sent and/or shared with me their own spreadsheet. Every teacher must complete the information on the master teacher spreadsheet copy. I am including a video on how to input your data on the master copy.

Please click here for the master copy.
