Warner Update
Making a difference, one person at a time
Being real beats being perfect (March 16 - March 23)
Earlier this week I tweeted this quote: “You can't please everyone, nor should you seek to, because then you won't please anyone, least of all yourself.”
- Dylan Moran
I don't know if I'd classify myself as a people pleaser, but I don't openly look for conflict. However, I recently had a conversation that left me reflecting for days. I shared my approach with a student to multiple individuals. My goal was to gain perspective (because sometimes I believe we are so close to a situation that our judgement is cloudy.) After a couple days I discovered one person disagreed with me, but chose to not bring it to me. The person shared it with others.
It was after this that a part of me wanted to close down shop and stop sharing, stop being open with my thoughts.
In this moment I felt as though every decision I make must be perfect.
And that’s important to remember because we are trained to believe that leaders are supposed to have all the answers. That they don’t struggle with decisions. That we should hide or be ashamed of the things we’re insecure or unsure about.
Real strength, however, comes from owning our own stories and not being ashamed of them.
Today, remember that real connection with people will not come from you being perfect, but instead from you not being afraid of your imperfections.
I choose to be real. How about you?
