PEMDAS
"Pink Elegant Male Ducks Are Sweet" is the mnemonic that we can use to remember the order of operations.
P=Parentheses, any problem in a parentheses goes first.
E= Exponents, are solve second.
M and D= Multiply or Divide, solve whatever problem from left to right.
A and S= Addition and Subtraction, solve whatever problem from left to right.
For Example
John ( a pink elegant male duck) had forty worms to fed his ducklings. Four ducklings wanted six worms each One of the duckling kept two worm with their father (John) to hold.Later taking the two worms to eat. How many worms was left uneaten?
Problem : How many worms was left uneaten?
What do we know?
We know that four ducks out of his five duckling wanted six worms each. One of his duckling gave two worms back to their father (John) to keep with the other worms. Later taking the two worms to eat. So, we can write the problem out like this:
40-(4 x 6)-2+2=
First we do whatever is in the parentheses first: (4 x 6)= 24
Key word: Left to right!
We then go down to subtraction since there isn't any exponent , multiplication, or division to do. 40-24-2=14
Then we add.
14+2= 16 worms left uneaten
