HILL HAPPENINGS
#HillHasHeart Edition - January 26, 2022
A Note from the Principal
Hello Hill Families,
It's hard to believe that we have just finished our first semester of school. I wanted to make everyone aware that I will be out for a very minor surgery Wednesday, January 26 - February 13th. Retired principal, Mr. Lance Harper will be covering for me while I am out. Students will love Mr. Harper! He served at Hill for many years as principal. He's excited to be back in our building!
Winter has arrived! As a reminder, students go outside everyday that the temperature with wind chill is above zero. This means that it is important that students have, at minimum, a winter coat, hat, and gloves everyday. Boots and snow pants are needed to play in the snow. With all of the winter gear, please remember to put your child's name on any tags. This helps with getting lost items to their rightful owner. Our lost and found is accumulating many items!
You should have received your child's report card via email. If you have not, please contact your child's teacher to ensure that we have a correct email address for you. This is always an exciting time of year as the students really begin to show growth in their learning! We will hold Spring Conferences in March. More information will be sent home in February.
Below, you will find a link to the Family Flyer. This electronic newsletter is created by our GISD Early Literacy and Math Coaches and Coordinators. It is filled with resources, educational activity ideas, recipes, community events and so much more. In addition, you will find a letter regarding the District's Challenging Academic Potential Program.
Thank you for sharing your children with us!
Most Sincerely,
Mrs. Burke
Proud Hill Principal

Attendance, Tardiness & Leaving Early Matters!
Additionally, when children leave early, they often miss the end of the day's closure. Please be mindful that every minute matters and we must work to make the most of every minute!
If your child is going to be absent for any reason, please be sure to contact our Attendance Line (810-591-0522). Calls can be place on that voicemail at any time day or night. Please be sure to include the reason for your child's absence so it can be noted for the absence to be excused. Attendance calls should not be placed on the main office line.
Second Marking Period Safety Patrol
Congratulations to our third marking period safety patrol: Nash Hitchcock, Ella Horwath, Oscar Moore, Aryelle Morales, Paxton Murawski, Brenden Warden, Khloie Beasley, Ethan Newton, Madilynn Metzer, Fisher Hall, and Kenleigh Radford. A picture will be shared next newsletter.

Counselor's Corner
Are you SAD? It can be common during the winter months.
Low or negative moods, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite and lack of motivation could be signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder or depression. This time of year, when we have less sunlight, our moods and sleep patterns can change. What can you do to combat the negative impact?
~Change your negative thoughts into positive self-talk: “I can do this!”
~Try using light bulbs that imitate sunlight.
~Exercise.
If you are struggling to improve your mood, and these tips don’t help, it could be time to make an appointment with your doctor.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Thompson
Hill/Hahn Counselor
Music Notes from Mrs. DuPrey
We have been busy in music class in all grades this past month. In fourth grade, we finished our second and final composition. The kids are worked in groups of four to create an original song that was based on a theme. I was so impressed with their creativity, and we had a LOT of fun together working through their ideas. Some of these compositions will be featured in our upcoming concert at the high school.
In third grade, we worked through our first composition. This original work is a chant in ABA form that the students created in groups and performed for the class. This grade was also reflected on their report card. If you are a parent of a third grade student, ask your child to tell you about ABA form, and see if they can perform their composition for you at home!
In second grade, we have started learning about music notation in duple meter. The kids have worked hard to write patterns that are made up of four beats, and are getting quite good at writing down a pattern that dictate to them. Ask your child to show you what kind of notation they have learned about so far in class.
In kindergarten and first grade, we have been working on using our singing voice, and keeping a steady beat.
We are moving forward with concerts this year! We have begun preparing some of the songs for our 3rd and 4th grade concert. The concert is Tuesday, March 8th at 7:00pm. Students will need to be arrive to the high school no later than 6:40pm. Students should be dressed in their "Sunday best". If you have any questions about the concert, please feel free to reach out to me via email. More information will be coming home at a later date.
Dates to Remember:
3rd and 4th grade concert - Tuesday, March 8th 7:00pm
1st and 2nd grade concert - Monday, May 9th, 7:00pm

Fitness Fun with Mr. Whitman
We’re off and running into a new year in PE class. During the month of January we completed our basketball unit. Students work on passing, dribbling, and shooting. We have a few different size hoops that the kids can shoot on to help them all make some baskets.
As we transition to February there will be 2 units going on simultaneously. The bowling equipment is set to arrive soon, so students will be doing that at least 1 day per week. We will also be teaming up with Mrs. DuPrey to complete our popular cardio drumming unit. These are two of the student’s favorite units, so it should be an exciting month for many!

Library News
News from the Hill Library:
As we begin our new year, I would like to reflect on how wonderful our Hill Elementary truly is. I am beyond grateful to be a part of an amazing school where our kids can come to learn and grow each day.
Our third and fourth grade kids have worked hard to learn how to alphabetize books by call numbers in our fiction section. During December, students have had the opportunity to “adopt a shelf” of their choice and it has been a big hit! Beyond proud of the care and time our kids have shown in our library.
During the months of December and January, we will be working on elements of a story,
2022 national and state book awards, and reviewing our library cardinal code. Third and fourth grade will continue to learn and practice the nonfiction number order of the Dewey Decimal System. Our kindergarten through second grade will continue to practice numbers, letters, and reading.
Look for more information next month on our upcoming book fair in March!
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Jacobs

Genot Picor Visits Third Graders!
We were so excited to welcome our annual guest speaker, Genot Picor on Friday, January 14th! He brought a wonderful presentation to students called, “Stories, Songs, and Dances of the Voyageur.” The information in his presentation goes right along with what students have been learning in our Social Studies History unit. We want to thank PTO for providing this guest speaker. The kids really enjoyed the presentation!
