ASPIRE Program's new endeavor is going to the dogs - literally
A mix of healthy ingredients including pumpkin, oats and other grains are carefully measured and combined by ASPIRE students. They roll out the dough and cut the mixture into dog-friendly shapes. After the dog biscuits have baked, students weigh and package the treats.
The entire process is a learning exercise for the students who are developing skills that help them in their journey to becoming independent, self-sufficient adults with transferable skills that allow them to work (paid or volunteer) according to their individual and unique abilities by age 21.
Dogs have been devouring the tasty treats and their owners are coming back for more. The dog cookies have been so popular that ASPIRE program leaders are considering upping production.
The ASPIRE program's dog cookies can be purchased at the front desk of Frontier High School, Running Creek Elementary and Elizabeth High School for $2 per 3-ounce bag. All proceeds go back into the program. Students use the money they earn for special outings and activities.
Promising start for new robotics team
Elizabeth High School’s Cardinal Robotics team is in its first year and already off to a promising start. The team is participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) program, which is an international robotics competition for high school students under the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) organization. As part of the program, each team member learns teamwork, real-world skills including design thinking, project management, metalworking, woodworking, and other science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills.
FRC teams are given a challenge each January. The teams have just six weeks to design, build and program their robot to complete the challenge. This year, the challenge is Destination: Deep Space.
Last Saturday, Elizabeth High School's FRC team attended a scrimmage hosted by Team 2996 Cougars Gone Wired at Coronado High School in Colorado Springs. The scrimmage allowed them to try out their robot on a full-sized playing field, meet other teams and get a preview of what to expect at the Colorado regional competition, which will be held March 21-23 at Denver University's Magnus Arena.
At the three-day regional competition, teams will work together in randomly assigned alliances of three teams and go head-to-head in the challenge. Alliances earn points for each task completed in the two-and-a-half-minute match.
The cost for FRC teams run about $12,000 to $15,000 per year. The Cardinal Robotics Team received grant funding from Boeing, the Department of Defense STEM Education Fund and the Elizabeth Education Foundation to help offset the program costs.
