Planning for the 20-21 School Year
6/12/2020
TO: All B-C-S Stakeholders
FROM: Guy Parmigian, Superintendent
Please see below for some important updates.
Planning for the 20-21 School Year
We are still in the "information gathering phase" of planning for the 2020-21 school year. We do not have any certain plans yet. We have had two Task Force meetings and will have another next week. These meetings include administration, certified and support staff, leadership of our two unions, and Board representation. We are studying our options on several decision points ranging from distancing to sanitizing to transportation. We are considering options for students whose parents do not feel comfortable sending them back to a school building for health reasons. We will remain committed to meeting the needs of EVERY child. Most importantly, we are still awaiting guidelines from the Ohio Department of Education on how to open schools in August and mandates we will have to follow from public health officials.
There are two broad options we are looking at and discussing. The first is opening school buildings to all students every day. A second broad option is bringing in half of the students each day to allow for more social distancing while the other half work from home.
My preference and the preference of the vast majority of parents and staff I have talked with is the first option-- opening school buildings to all students every day. However, we will only do this if we can do it safely and in accordance with the rules/guidelines established by state and local public health officials. We are going to have to rely on the public health experts to advise us.
We are also preparing for the possibility of having to do Remote Instruction again sometime during the school year if we are forced to close our school buildings because of a spike in cases of Covid-19. We are going to build on the plan we used this past year, and improve it based on the surveys we conducted.
In summary, at this time there are simply more questions than answers on what next school year will look like. Patience and flexibility will be key. I will continue to communicate and update you all as we go forward. Also, remember, I set the date of July 10 as the deadline when I will issue some kind of written progress report on the plan for the 20-21 school year. The first day of school remains August 26.
Building Open Houses
We have yet to publish information on building level open houses in August due to uncertainty around Covid-19. Stay tuned.

Mental Health and Well Being
These are challenging times for adults, and more so for young people. If you think your child can benefit from talking to a counselor, please do not hesitate to call your child's school on March 30 or after.
I also want to remind you of the Crisis Text Line:
Text HOME to 741741 from anywhere in the United States, anytime, about any type of crisis.
One suggestion for our overall mental health is for us to all get outside and walk, or do some kind of physical activity (while practicing social distancing). Something as simple as a walk can do wonders for the mood and help with anxiety.

A Message to Parents/Guardians of Oak Harbor Student-Athletes
FROM: The Oak Harbor Athletic Department
5/29/2020
Greetings!
Coaches and Administration alike are excited about the opportunity for our students to return to limited athletic participation. It is important for you to know that while we are all anxious to resume athletics, we will proceed in a cautious manner that will seek to insure the safety and well-being of our students, coaches, and subsequently our families.
Our coaching staff will be following the sport-specific guidelines developed by Responsible RestartOhio and we will be instituting a Three-Phase program recommended by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Some of the components of this program include:
- Recording the Body Temperature of all athletes - We ask that each athlete take their own temperature IMMEDIATELY PRIOR to reporting to their sport activity and report that temperature to their coach. Our coaches will be keeping a daily log of all athletes that report to an activity. If the reading is 100.4 degrees or greater, the athlete should remain home and not report. Any athlete that reports a temperature of 100.4 degrees or greater to their coach will be sent home immediately.
- Social Distancing (6 feet apart) of athletes and coaches will be maintained at all times.
- Athletes will need to bring their own water bottle(s) and have it properly marked. Sharing of water bottles and equipment is prohibited.
- Coaches will have face coverings on their person at all times, and will wear them in instances where the coach cannot adequately maintain proper social distance
- Locker rooms, training room, and drinking fountains will not be available due to sanitary and distancing issues.
- The weight room and wrestling room will remain closed for now with a possible reopening in phase 2.
Please be aware that in the first two phases of the OHSAA recommended program, some sports are limited in the number of athletes that may gather at one time. Also, please know that our administration will have sanitizing materials available to all of our coaches to properly clean equipment after each session.
If you as a parent/guardian are not comfortable allowing your son/daughter to participate at this time, your wishes will be fully supported by our administration and coaching staff. We certainly understand that these are different times and different situations for every individual and family.
Please let me know of any questions or concerns you may have.
Practice schedules will be communicated by individual coaches.
Let us all hope that these are the first steps in a return to better times for our students and us.
