Today the grade 8 & 9s watched a presentation “Unpacking the N-Word”. This presentation explored the origins and evolution of the N-Word. Through an edutainment style that combined slam poetry, video content, audience participation & Interaction, participants learned to put one of the most loaded words in the English language into proper historical context.
Please take time to ask your child in grade 8 or 9 about what they learned today!
Complete your Parent/Guardian Information Verification Form
Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is currently reviewing and updating all parent and guardian contact information within the Division’s student information system. This one-time, full-scale review is to ensure the Division has complete and accurate data on file as Alberta Education moves to a new way of capturing information in the provincial database.
As part of the data review, EIPS requires all families to carefully review the parent and guardian information on file for each student in your family—even if you’ve recently completed a Student Correction and Verification Form. Families can quickly and easily indicate no updates are needed, if that’s the case, or provide updated contact information as needed. The form also includes a handful of new questions to help the Division understand each parent and guardian’s relationship to the student and their preferences for receiving communication from the school and Division.
To review your information, simply log in to your PowerSchool Parent Portal and open the “Parent/Guardian Information Verification Form” from the left-hand menu or notification at the top of the page.
Review all information carefully, provide updates where needed and submit your form by April 30. One form is required for each student currently registered at an EIPS school. Only one parent/guardian will complete the form for each student—all associated parent/guardian information for each student is available to review on the same form.
If you have any questions about your Parent/Guardian Information Verification Form, reach out to the school at 780-467-3800.
If you would like to publically acknowledge a staff member at FRH please fill in the attached Google Form.
Book of the Week / March Madness: Library Edition
March Madness continues in the library! The theme this month is books that have been turned into movies (or tv adaptations). What’s different though? We’re asking your opinion! Each week two titles will be featured and we’re asking students to vote on which is the better screen adaptation. The best part? When you vote, you can enter to win your own copy of the book! Stop by the library to cast your vote today.
This week’s contenders are Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling versus Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Both of these novels bring readers into worlds full of fantasy and adventure. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone tells the story of an unloved orphan who finds out he is a wizard and is invited to join Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Lightning Thief is about a 12-year-old who learns his father is Poseidon (the Greek god of the sea) and sets off to stop a war between the gods.

Yearbook
FR Haythorne will be using cutting-edge technology to allow students to tell their own story in our 2023 yearbook. Yearbook+ allows students to use a safe platform to submit candid photos for use in the yearbook. The program itself will flag content it might deem inappropriate and Mrs. Huculak will also have access to manage content.
Once students receive the yearbook, this bonus digital content can be unlocked by scanning printed photos in the book. This will allow more students to be able to share their story than our 80 pages allow.
We will be starting with Grade 9 students the weeks before Spring break – showing them how to access this site and submit their photos. We will then move onto the grade 8 students right after the break and the 7’s in the near future. Printed yearbook + digital photos = Yearbook of the Future!
EIPS Annual Feedback Survey for Parents and Caregivers
Dear Elk Island Public Schools families:
Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) wants to hear from you about your experience with the Division and your school. Share your thoughts by completing the 2023 EIPS Annual Feedback Survey: For parents and caregivers—open March 1-23.
Annually, EIPS conducts the survey to gauge its progress toward meeting the goals and priorities outlined in its Four-Year Education Plan. Families are asked a series of questions about their experiences with EIPS and the school their child attends, the overall performance of the Division, the quality of education being provided to students and areas for improvement. The survey feedback helps the Division develop new strategies to better serve students and the wider community.
TAKE THE SURVEY NOW!
Survey closes March 23, 2023
Open to all EIPS parents and caregivers
NOTE: The survey is anonymous and only takes a few minutes to complete. If you want to share the experiences of more than one child, or if you have a child who attends classes at more than one EIPS school—such as Next Step and an EIPS senior high school—simply complete the survey again.
The Division is also conducting a similar survey with students in Grade 9 and Grade 12, who are completing the survey in class between March 1-23. Like the parent and caregiver survey, the questions focus on the student’s experience with the Division and their school. EIPS will share the results from the 2023 EIPS Annual Feedback Surveys before the end of the school year.
Thank you,
Elk Island Public Schools

Movement between theatres will not be allowed. If you have a friend or family member who requires wheelchair seating please inform Mr. Drozda and a space will be reserved for them.
Thank you for attending and we look forward to seeing you back at Cineplex for this outstanding event!
Do you or someone you know have a really great career that you believe our students should know about?
FRH is looking for volunteers to come to our school at lunch (12:21-12:51) and highlight their careers to our students as possible future career opportunities. As we are doing our best to help prepare our students for high school, we also want to look at the way in which some careers require specific courses or streams of education and want to share this information with our students, so they do not miss out on potential opportunities.
Our Lifelong Learning committee has created a presentation that allows you to fill in the information specific to your job and takes all the guesswork out of what you should present, while also giving you an easy and effective way to best present this key information.
Anyone who is interested in presenting their career is asked to email Mr. Wever so that we can share the blank presentation with you and arrange a lunchtime that works.
We are hoping that these can become a regular occurrence within our school that students are aware of and can plan to attend careers of interest regularly. Thank you for helping to support our community!

A big THANK YOU to EIPS Volunteers
National Volunteer Week takes place April 16-22. On behalf of the Board of Trustees at Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS), I want to say a huge thank you to all EIPS volunteers and school families who help make the Division what it is today. Whether you volunteered for the first time this year or have committed many years to EIPS, your initiative, hard work and dedication are invaluable. You build a legacy for others to follow and a memory for students to cherish as they journey into their futures.
So, thank you again for your overflowing support. Your actions are a direct reflection of the kindness and compassion found in all the communities EIPS serves. This National Volunteer Week, I encourage everyone to celebrate the hundreds of volunteers and thousands of hours put into making schools across the Division places for students to learn, grow and succeed.
Trina Boymook Chair, EIPS Board of Trustees

Watch for Thin Ice
Remember, be aware of thin ice this time of year. Depending on changing temperatures, ice can form and melt to varying degrees on outdoor bodies of water. Try to remind your child about the dangers of thin ice, obey all posted signs, take proper care and remain a safe distance from the ice.
For more information about ice safety, visit the Canadian Red Cross.
Did you know?
The colour of ice may be an indication of its strength. Clear blue ice is the strongest. White opaque is half as strong as blue ice. And, grey ice is unsafe—greyness indicates the presence of water.
