Information From Our District Counselors
Fostering Resiliency
Dr. Tammy Davis provides thoughtful suggestions in her article Bouncing Back. Dr. Davis conducted an informal poll of students in a school in Virginia. She asked two questions. The first question - “What is the worst thing that has happened in the world?” Students responded with answers about 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, Terrorism, etc. Her second question - “What’s the best thing that has happened in the world?” Students responded; iPods, computers, cell phones, people who need help, can get help, etc. Our youth have amazing opportunities even in the midst of some of the worst events. How do we explain why things happen but more importantly how do we help them find a reason to be hopeful?
Internal Assets: When you can identify your internal assets and strengths you can draw on them to cope during difficult times. Take a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle and on one side write “strengths” and on the other side write “ways this strength helps me cope.” Discuss those strengths with your child/adolescent and how they can transfer to various situations and events.
External Support: It is difficult for many of us, especially youth to know when to and who to ask for help. Have your child/adolescent make a list of all the people they can talk to when they need assistance. Once the list is made have your child/adolescent go back and write next to each name the type of situation or problem that can discuss with that person. This will provide a framework of support.
Hopefulness for the future: Focus on the future. Take a piece of paper and draw a horizontal line across the paper. Start with today and have them write what they would like to happen from today into their future. Their goals, their desired achievements, what they want their life to be. Then go back and with each and ask - identify who has control over whether or not these things happen. You may also want to discuss any potential barriers to reaching their goals and how ways you can minimize or overcome those barriers. Despite anything that has happened in the past, as they get older they have the ability to help control the things they want in the future.
A few other tips suggested are:
Acknowledge what has happened is not fair and tragic and it’s okay to feel bad or sad
Allow yourself to feel your feeling. Our kids learn best by modeling what they see during times of difficulty
Try to see the glass half full - talk about the positive
Maintain a sense of normalcy
Encourage students to “give back”
It is our responsibility to help our children and students feel “hopeful and confident that the future is bright.”
This is a summary of the article found in the American School Counselor Association’s Periodical School Counselor. Dr. Davis is a professor at Marymount University, Arlington, VA.
Chromebook Repairs
BEFORE you consider bringing your Chromebook up to the school for repair, please keep in mind a few important details:
The Chromebook repair process will take longer than usual due to the precautions Hoover staff will take to stay safe. This includes a quarantine time period before we pass it off to the technician and an additional quarantine time period once it is received by the technician.
Only critical repairs will be processed at this time (as in, the Chromebook doesn't work and learning can't take place). Unnecessary or non-critical repairs will be sent back to BPES and returned to the student.
In order to process a Chromebook repair, you must complete this form first.
You may be able to fix some Chromebook problems yourself! Please view this document and possibly save yourself a trip and a week or more of downtime!
Daily Broadcast
Bluff Park Broadcast will still be a part of our students' lives over the next 8 weeks, and we need your help! We are looking for students or families to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. If you would like to join us on broadcast, please send us a video of your child or family leading the Pledge, and then watch our daily broadcasts to see yourselves! Also, keep watching for more calls for videos that will be a part of Bluff Park Broadcast! To submit videos, either share them via your student's Google Drive to Mrs. Copeland at macopeland@hoover.k12.al.us, or email them to her at macopeland@hoover.k12.al.us.
From Mrs. Gaines
¡Hola mi familia de Bluff Park! I have really missed seeing all of my ‘amigos’ in class these past few weeks. I wanted to reach out and really say MUCHAS GRACIAS to all the parents and students who have gone above and beyond and continued to be involved in Spanish. I have really enjoyed seeing the creativity in the Flipgrid video challenges and seeing my students use their Spanish at home with the Spanish choices as well. I look forward to hearing from more of you each week. I wanted to suggest some resources for those who want to learn a little more on their own as well. Some of my favorites are Duolingo and Word Reference. Duolingo offers practice and Word Reference is a dictionary. On youtube, you can find Rockalingua that has many videos of Spanish themes.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I hope you are all doing well and look forward to hearing from you and/or seeing you all soon.
Gracias for all you do,
Profesora Melany Gaines

Guidelines to Prevent Illness
- Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Cover coughs and sneezes. Use a tissue to cover coughs and sneezes, then dispose of the tissue. When a tissue is not available, cough or sneeze into your elbow.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.
- Wash hands for 20 seconds. Washing hands often under clean, running water can help prevent the spread of germs. If you cannot wash your hands, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60-95% alcohol.
