At Hasin, we are "Learning Today, Shaping Tomorrow!"
What a wonderful beginning of the year we have had! If you are new to Haskin, we are thrilled to have you join us. If you are returning, welcome back! "Camp Haskin-Where Learning is an Adventure!" is our 2019-2020 school theme. The children have already begun to settle into the "school" routine. It was great to see so many smiling faces at the "Stop and Drop/Chalk the Walk". The staff is enthusiastic about the year and are looking forward to working with the students. The energy and atmosphere in the building is very positive and we are all ready for learning!
REPORT AN ABSENCE
To report an absence, parents or guardians are to call the school at 815-786-8812 before 8:30 a.m. on the day of the absence. Voice mail will answer calls before 7:00 a.m. and after 3:30 p.m. If a phone call is not received, a reasonable attempt will be made to contact a parents or guardian. If contact cannot be made, the absence will be considered UNEXCUSED. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Please be reminded that school is in session from 8:10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Students who arrive late to school are considered tardy and need to sign in at the office. Please make sure your child(ren) arrive before the tardy bell rings.
STUDENT DISMISSAL
Change in Usual Transportation
Please notify the Haskin office, at 815-786-8812, of any change in your child’s normal dismissal routine. NOTICE SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THE OFFICE NO LATER THAN 2:00 p.m. so that we can notify our staff and ensure your child’s safe dismissal. Along with a change in transportation information, please include your child’s full name, the name of your child’s teacher, the date, and your signature. We prefer that a written notice be placed in student backpacks so that the office receives notification of the change early in the day. If a change occurs after your child is already in school, please call the school office prior to 2:00 p.m. If the office does not have notice of a change in transportation, we will send the student in their usual manner.
Student (Parent) Pick-up
Please arrive on time each day to pick up your child. It is helpful to have an emergency backup plan in case something happens at the last minute that causes you to be unable to be here on time.
All students must depart from school grounds following dismissal, unless they are involved in a supervised after school program or activity.
Signing Students Out During the School Day
In the event that your son/daughter needs to leave school before the end of the day, please send a note and plan to come into the office to sign him/her out. Your child will be called to the office when you arrive, and you may sign him/her out there. Please be prepared to present identification.

VISITOR/VOLUNTEER CELL PHONE USE
If you anticipate your visit to be more than a few minutes, please turn your cell phones to vibrate or off to limit distractions to the learning environment. The use of a cell phone in a school zone is against the law. Please refrain from using a cell phone while in a school zone or on school property while in a moving vehicle.
A person regardless of age, may not use a wireless telephone at any time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in a school speed zone established under Section 11-605. Further information regarding 625 ILCS 5/12-610.1 may be found at http:www.ilga.gov./legislation/ilcs/documents/062500050K12-610.1.htm.
ANIMALS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY
In order to assure student health and safety, animals are not allowed on school property, except in the case of a service animal accompanying a student or other individual with a documented disability. This rule may be temporarily waived by the building principal in the case of an educational opportunity for students, provided that (a) the animal is appropriately housed, humanely cared for, and properly handled, and (b) students will not be exposed to a dangerous animal or an unhealthy environment.
TREATS IN SCHOOL
Often students bring treats or snacks to school to share on special occasions. While bringing in snacks does not pose a problem, food allergies and health concerns require that food brought in must be store bought and unopened with clearly labeled ingredients. Non-food items such as pencils, stickers, bookmarks, or other small items are also encouraged in lieu of edible treats.
Safety provisions will be set up for food or environmental allergies on an individual basis.
Curricular activities involving food will be dealt with individually.
If you have any questions, please contact the Haskin office at 815-786-8812.
SCHOOL SAFETY, VISITORS, AND VOLUNTEERS
We believe very strongly in being responsive and current in our practice and even more in keeping your children safe at school. Our district and staff continue to dialogue to make improvements and develop more tools in order to be even more responsive in the event of an emergency. Please know that we are still the same welcoming building on the inside and updates are a high priority for us.
Please enter the front door only and sign into the office. We ask that you do not enter from the playground doors or other side doors. We also ask as we have in the past for you to not walk your child to class.
Please ring the bell at the front door. We will welcome you to our building and ask that you identify yourself and share the reason why you are there. Example: "I am Mrs. Smith and Johnny forgot his folder today."
After signing into the office we will provide you with the appropriate identification for volunteering in our building. All volunteers will be asked to read and sign our Volunteer Handbook prior to volunteering. A handbook can be picked up in the school office and is also attached below. If you plan to volunteer or chaperone any future field trips, we ask that you fill out the form in the back and return it to school.
We appreciate your support in keeping our students and staff safe.

NOTES FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE
Head Lice is a Nuisance!!
This information is being distributed as a precautionary measure to curtail and/or control any head lice outbreak in our district. Since cases of head lice are always a possibility when dealing with school children, we are recommending that all parents check their child's head regularly once a week.
The following signs may indicate the presence of lice in your child:
- Persistent itching of the head or the back of the neck
- Scratch marks on the scalp
- Nits attached to the hair - grayish white eggs visible to the naked eye difficult to remove from hair shaft unlike dandruff or hair spray flakes.
Lice are easily transmitted by close physical contact. They can also be transmitted by sharing head coverings, combs and brushes from an infected person. If you child has lice, please contact the school nurse. Immediate treatment of all cases is the best way to contain an outbreak. Your child(ren) will be rechecked before returning to class.
THERE IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF...EXCEPT NOT TREATING IT PROPERLY AND PROMPTLY!
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support in this matter.
Vision and Hearing Screenings
Each school year vision/hearing screenings are conducted for Sandwich District 430 schools in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Illinois Department of Public Health. Vision screenings will be done as mandated for the following children: Preschool, Kindergarten, 2nd, 8th, special education students, new/transfer students, and students with any other concerns. Screenings at Haskin will be as follow:
PRE-K SCREEN
December 9, 2019
PRE-K RESCREEN
December 19, 2019
K-3 SCREEN
October 21, 2019
K-3 RESCREEN
October 30, 2019
Vision screening is not a substitute for complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months and that an evaluation is on file at the school. This notice is not a permission to test and is not required to be returned. Vision screening is not an option. If a vision exam report is not on file at your child's school (in the mandated age/grade) they will be screened. You may contact the school nurse with any questions you might have.
Mobile Dentist
Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
Medication Reminder
Any student requiring medication during the school day needs to have a completed school medication form on file in the office. This includes all prescription, over the counter, inhalers, and emergency/rescue type medications. Forms can be found on the district website or you may contact the School Nurse.
Attention Students With Asthma – Illinois Law (Public Act 99-0843) requests students with a diagnosis of asthma provide an Asthma Action Plan for School. Please ask your Doctor to provide a copy to the school.
Illness
Please remember the Sandwich District policy in regards to fever, as stated in our handbook on page 8, “Fever: Students sent home from school with a fever of 100 degrees or higher may return to school when they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine.”
If a student is sent home by school personnel due to a fever, he or she will not be penalized with an unexcused or excused absence (will not be counted as one of the seven parent excused absences) the following day in order to remain home fever free for 24 hours.
Healthy Children Learn Better!
Learning the Zones
Students in first through third grade have been busy listening to books about feelings and learning which emotional states help them learn! They have sorted feeling words into zones, or color groups, based on how intense the emotions are, and how conducive they are to learning. Students have also had fun predicting which zone they would be in, given certain situations. They have learned some new ways to breathe in order to calm themselves, and even some different ways to think about situations. These strategies help them to self regulate their emotions and to move from one zone to another.
Miss Raynor's Class
Miss Raynor’s class had a wonderful first week of school! We explored our classroom, learned our friends and teachers' names, and are continuing to learn the new school routine!
Miss Boyer's Class
Mrs. Mlot and Mrs. Moline's Class
We are off to a great start in pre-k! The kids are doing a great job learning our rules and routines. They are also enjoying making lots of new friends!
The kindergarteners at Haskin School have been busy meeting new friends and learning about their classrooms. The students have been engaged in lessons of how to behave in school and how to become more independent. During free choice centers they are learning how to make good choices, share, and take turns. To coincide with our camping theme, the students ate s’mores as part of a special snack!
First graders are working on a Getting to Know You activity. Each student completed an iPad activity, creating "apps" about themselves. We enjoyed sharing them with each other.
Math About Me
Second graders at Haskin School have been sharing about themselves with their new friends. Making picture graphs and bar graphs with “Ways We Get to School” and “Birthdays” has been a great way to share our new data with our friends. Making a “Math About Me” book after discussing numbers special to each child was important. Some friends realized they had the same special numbers as other friends! We are off to a great start in second grade!!!
All about Me Posters
Third graders created and shared a poster about themselves to help the class
get to know everyone.
