News for February 25th-March 1st
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming!
February 25th - March 1st the spring book fair will be in full swing. To help us better prepare they are offering a new “e-wallet” feature so we can load an account with our child’s spending money ahead of time. No more lost envelopes in backpacks or forgetting to send in cash on their shopping day!
Go to http://www.scholastic.com/bf/indiancreekelementaryschoool1 and look for the e-wallet option in the middle of the page. (Green background)
Any leftover funds after your child shops will be refunded to the card. Questions? Email our librarian Mrs. Moore at MooreCA@lisd.net.

What We Are Learning This Week
Reading- Please continue to read at home for at least 20 minutes each night. Also, I-station is always a fun way for them to practice reading skills while playing fun games. We would appreciate it if you would have your child log in this weekend. We are working on procedural writing. Make a day of looking at recipes or building a model together. Maybe take an adventure to hardware store and build something together. Both Lowes and Home Depot have kids building classes. The children make little projects. You would have to contact them to find out what they are building and the time.
Friday, March 1st-Monthly I-station Assessment
Language Arts- We are beginning a unit on Literary Non-Fiction. We have been learning in first grade how readers have different purposes for reading different genres, for example reading narrative for enjoyment and expository to learn new information about a topic. In this unit we will introduce a new genre of narrative non-fiction, which are stories written in narrative form but present information that is factual such as biographies or autobiographies.
Social Studies-We will continue learning about historical figures who have made important impacts on our communities, states, and nation. We will be reading biographies and autobiographies on figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Francis Scott Key, Eleanor Roosevelt, and more.
Spelling/Words Their Way:
We will have a new list of sight words coming home on Tuesday. The words for List 23 are work, try, must, start, does. We will test on FRIDAY. Please review last weeks words. Many students had problems with the words could and give.
On Monday, your child will bring home a sheet with directions, a sheet with a group of pictures or words, and a mat. Please cut the pictures/words apart and have your child practice sorting them by the rule they are studying. Student should practice the sort Monday through Thursday. On Thursday night they will need to glue their sort down to the mat.
Math: We will be continuing our geometry unit on the study of 2D shapes. We will be sorting and classifying regular and irregular shapes based on their attributes. We will also be working on identifying 2D shapes including: circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, rhombuses and hexagons. We will also learn how to describe their attributes using geometric vocabulary.
Science: We will be begin a unit on the characteristics and needs of plants and animals. In this unit we will be studying and investigation the difference between living and non-living things based on their basic needs and ability to produce offspring. We will investigate how the characteristics of an animal are related to where it lives, how it moves and what it eats. We will also be learning how to identify and compare parts of plants.
