Northview Staff Professional Development
How does this relate to teaching our students? As educators, we are role models to the students all day long. We must model how to handle conflict in a constructive manner, and this book does a wonderful job at giving adults strategies with this skill.
When we build skills as people, we become better as teachers. I am impressed with the outcomes that have already developed from the book study. We will continue to engage in professional development as a staff throughout the school year.
Counseling Corner
Last month, Northview students learned about the character trait of Gratitude and celebrated by having a School Spirit Day! We learned that an Attitude of Gratitude means being in the present moment and choosing to be thankful and appreciative for things in our life. When we use a gratitude mindset, we feel more confident, positive, optimistic, and joyful about the things we have and the people that matter most! In our classroom guidance classes, we continued to discuss expected vs. unexpected behaviors and started learning about the size of our problems. Knowing the size of our problems (small, medium, big) help us decide on a problem-solving strategy.
Our character trait for December is Empathy. Empathy means understanding how someone else is feeling and then showing that person support. We will be focusing on two elements of Empathy: Shared Emotion and Seeing Other Perspectives. We will celebrate this character trait on Thursday, December 23 with a Pajama Day! Students can wear their pajamas (Holiday themed if preferred) and enjoy a day of comfort before we go on Winter Break!

Kindergarten
The kindergarten students became the teachers during their recent phonics celebration. They invited a stuffed animal friend to join them for "Word School," where they taught their stuffed friends the kindergarten snap (sight) words by reading, writing, spelling, and cheering the snap words.
A delicious Thanksgiving Tasting Lunch was provided by the kindergarten parents so that the students could experience and taste some traditional Thanksgiving foods. A huge thank you to the kindergarten parents for their generosity in making this experience possible.

That same celebration included readings of the students' nonfiction booklets. The second grade authors wrote about topics on which they were self-proclaimed experts, and included the expert vocabulary and other nonfiction text features that they noticed mentor authors using. They learned what makes an effective introduction and conclusion and how to elaborate with more than just facts. The experts very much enjoyed learning from each other on topics ranging from basketball to making chocolate chip cookies to dirt bikes to manicures!
Surprise guest reader Mrs. Henschel read a nonfiction story about a firehouse light that has been burning for 120 years! The kids were so intrigued about this story! You can check out the story and see a live video cam of the lightbulb at https://www.centennialbulb.org/
Your kids would love to tell you all about it!
