Tays Titan Team Update

October 14, 2016

A Message from Kris

First of all, I miss seeing all of you!!! A cadre of our PBIS committee went to a training at the ESC to learn about PBIS implementation success. Good news...we are on the right track with our ideas!

When I was a young child, my favorite book for anyone in my house to read to me was the old Golden book – The Monster at the End of the Book starring loveable, furry old Grover. I passed this tradition on to all my nephews & nieces… I love this book. At one point, Grover creates a solid, thick brick wall and challenges the reader to try to turn the page – only to find that the next page has Grover underneath the bricks with the following line, “Did you know that you are very strong?” (I have a copy over my head in my office if you want to read it!!!)

In mid- October, it is not uncommon to feeling like you are hitting the brick wall (grading, emails, challenging behaviors increasing, tiredness setting in…) anything else that could be your BRICK wall. But as you wrap up this week & enter this next week, I want you to remember that you are very strong!

Know that I am aware that many of you are feeling overwhelmed…(me too…) but I want to share with you what gets me refocused…I stop and I appreciate. I write thank you notes to some people that I need to send them to… I also make a list of things that I want to accomplish this next week…

On your own, I urge you to stop and slow down to appreciate and know that you are very strong. I even give you permission to spend a few minutes doing a community building activity within your classroom – and reaffirming your learning community or your teaching team.

I am PROUD to serve as the Principal of Tays Junior High – (and in case you didn’t know – there is no monster at the end of the book – it is loveable, furry old Grover) May your next week be one that makes you show your loveable side – but I know that you are stronger than you know!

The Monday Morning Mindset Message for this next week is going to have a challenge in it for you to accept ( or reject...)

Have a great weekend!!!! Kris

Early Dismissal

Your department meetings are slotted to start at 12:30. This allows for you to finish your own work, transport children (if that is something that you need to do) or grab a lunch. It is expected that you are on time for your department meeting so that you are honoring everyone's time.

Thanks for working together to ensure a superb working environment.

Faculty Meeting change...

Due to unforeseen scheduling by the district, we are moving our Faculty meeting originally scheduled for November 4th to November 9th 2:45 - 3:15/November 10th 6:45-7:15am. *This moves the ILT meeting to November 16th 2:45pm.

On the November 4th early dismissal day, unless you have a district assigned meeting - you will be able to plan with your departments. Your department chair will make a plan with you on the 10/21 date. Your specifics will be from your department chair.

Something that I saw at TJH that makes me proud to be a Titan is...

  • The happiness and joy displayed by staff. They make each day a new adventure and the attitude is contagious. I love coming to school!!
  • Students from Ms. Land's Teen Leadership class volunteering to help with Special Needs Arrival Duty because they knew that a student needed an incentive to come to school in the morning. That student is now excited about getting out of the car and into the building each day because she knows that her friends are waiting for her.
  • a student holding the door open for a special needs student. I'd like to recognize....
  • 8th Grade Volleyball Girls

These ladies played their heart out last night and SWEPT Seven Lakes!!!

Special thanks goes to....

  • The special education team for all their hard work!
  • Ashee Walker for jumping in when a substitute did not arrive in time for first period. She had the class following their routine and ready for the sub when she arrived. No questions asked...she saw a need, and she was there to support students.

  • Ladies PE
  • Molly Neidens for taking on Science Olympiad with 70 kids. Their first competition is 10/22 and they're so excited. I know under Molly's leadership they will do great.

Be sure to add your thank yous here: https://goo.gl/forms/a0JXxYViAftgoQB52

We will recognize folks each week.... Thanks for honoring each other!!!

Fund for Teachers awards fellowship grants for self-designed professional growth to full time PreK-12 teachers who recognize the value of inquiry, the power of knowledge, and their ability to make a difference.

The Fund for Teachers fellowship application will become available online on October 1, 2016 at www.fundforteachers.org and is due by 5:00 PM on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. The fellowship application asks teachers to thoughtfully consider not only what objective they'd like to pursue, but also why, and how they foresee the proposed experience making a difference for them as teachers, for their students, and for their school community.

Teachers who are interested in applying are invited to attend one of the information meetings scheduled at the ESC. Choose either Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM in Room 1200J OR Thursday, October 13, 2016 from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM in Room 1030. All attendees should register in Eduphoria.

Please post the attached flyer to inform teachers about this great opportunity.
