Mariner Memo
April 26, 2019
It was a surprise last Thursday when we found out about the movement in the legislature on the forgiveness of state emergency days and as a consequence we were not able to get out our newsletter, sorry about that! This week is packed with two week's worth of information.
PSAT 8
This year our 8th grade students took the PSAT 8 and one of the major differences this year compared to years past is that this also counted for the ELA and Math components of the M-Step, saving our students 4 hours of testing. The PSAT 8 is the first step in the college board series that culminates in the taking of the SAT during the 11th grade year. Several years ago, the College Board and Khan Academy teamed up to prepare students to do their best for this all important assessment. When the results of the PSAT 8 are made available, they will be sent home with students and information will be provided instructing students (and parents) on how to work with Khan Academy to make progress. At Marine City High School students will begin creating accounts and using the results of the PSAT 8 to build a profile aimed at personal improvement and maximum performance.
8th Grade Trip to SC4
On May 16th 8th grade students will travel to St. Clair Community College as part of a county wide initiative aimed at introducing students to all that SC4 offers. Students will have the opportunity to sit in classes, visit labs, and explore the programming options in order to begin the process of setting their plans for the future. More information will be coming home soon.
6th Grade Orientation
Today marks the end of our second week of the 4th quarter of the school year. As we enter May next week that can only one thing, time to welcome in the new class of Marine City Middle School. On Wednesday, May 1st we will swell in size as the class of 2026 gets their first official visit to MCMS during our 6th grade orientation day. Students will learn the ins and outs of the middle school cafeteria, have all of their questions answered, practice locker combinations, play mentor games, and much more. In the evening, we will transition from the student welcome to the parent welcome with a 6pm presentation to the parents in the media center. We encourage all parents, experienced in the ways of the middle school and brand new to this state of schooling, to attend.

Caught with Character
With the last minute change to the schedule last week we didn't have the chance to properly celebrate the students Caught with Character at Marine City Middle School.Congratulations to our last two grand prize winners: Kiya Burkhart and Brookelynn Haslem. Kiya selflessly helped a classmate with her yearbook page that was up against a deadline and Brookelynn has been unstacking and setting up chairs for Mrs. Smith throughout the year. Check out their interviews below.
Congratulations also go out to our runners up for a job well done: Nathan Korchmar, Faith Ward, and Chad Dietlin. Keep the Positive Vibes going!
What's being talked about
This week during P2 time student learned all about the Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. This was an important strength to dive into as it is not often one that comes to mind when discussing character. It connects very well with being connected to the world around you and being in the moment. To have appreciation for beauty and to recognize excellence is to be able to judge what is around you and not seek to understand but to recognize greatness in others.
Next week our students transition into a very interesting strength, PURPOSE. A neat way to think about purpose is the meaning of everything, which is both big and vague, but also very intriguing.
