Hooker Oak Staff Spotlight
Carrie Jamison, Speech Therapist
My name is Ms. Carrie and this is my second year at Hooker Oak. Students love coming to Speech because Mighty Acorns speak loud and proud! We want our friends and teachers to listen and understand us. It makes us feel confident and happy.
When I'm not at Hooker Oak, you might find me running for fitness or hanging out with my three children on the musical theater stage or on the football field. I love Shubert's ice cream in the Summer and watching the geese fly in the Winter.
When I was in elementary school I loved reading The Babysitter's Club series, playing basketball, and searching for blue bellied lizards.
PINK SHIRT DAY INFORMATION!
On Wednesday, February 24th, all Hooker Oak students and staff are encouraged to wear pink as we join other Chico Unified School District Elementary schools and stand up to bullying! The tradition of wearing pink to stand up to bullying was established when two high school boys in Nova Scotia purchased pink shirts and handed them out to classmates after they heard that a new male student at their school had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt. With the theme of BE the ONE, our students will be asked to pledge to be the one will to stand up when they see bullying.
We know that when one stands up, others will follow. Standing up can mean saying something to those involved in the moment, inviting the targeted student to join in inclusive activities, or reporting to adults at home and school. This is one way we can all impact the kind of school we want to create for one another. We also invite staff and family members to join in wearing pink as a sign of standing up to bullying. Shy about pink? Consider socks, a tie, a scarf, or a wrist band.
BE THE ONE!!
February is Kindness Month!
The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bullying prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. The Great Kindness Challenge at Hooker Oak will devote all month to performing as many acts of kindness as possible on campus. Using the provided Kindness calendar given to all classes, students accept the challenge and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!
Pennies for Patients
Pennies for Patients is running again, all through February. It supports the LLS to aid in the research and treatment of Leukemia and Lymphoma. Did you know that coins that get deposited to Coinstar help out the national coin shortage by allowing them to return to US Mints?
Gather up your change in the envelopes and boxes sent home. Keep track of how much you've collected to earn prizes. Bring in your collections when you're full or before the end of the month to deposit in your class's bag. You can also go to the website to learn more.
