Principal's Message
U.S. News and World Report annually publishes rankings of public high schools in the United States and the District of Columbia. These rankings are based on six factors, including college readiness and graduation rates. Congratulations to ISB for being listed as first in the state of Oregon and 21st in the nation. The link below leads you to the issue published April 27, 2021.
International School of Beaverton
The nation traditionally celebrates educators each year. This year, May 4, 2021 has been proclaimed by President Biden as National Teacher Appreciation Day and May 2 through May 8, 2021, as National Teacher Appreciation Week. This provides us the opportunity to acknowledge the work of all educators, especially in a year that has challenged all of us to face the ongoing impacts of a global pandemic. Thank you to FRISB, our wonderful parent group, for providing treat bags to the entire staff, as well as continental breakfast on Tuesday, and lunch on Thursday. Parents and families have truly been educational partners with us this year.
Another note of congratulations, this one from the Oregon Historical Society. You can read more at Oregon History Day on the OHS website.
Congratulations, 2021 History Day Participants!
Thank you to the 125 students who participated in the virtual Oregon History Day state contest this year, and congratulations to the students who will represent Oregon at the virtual National History Day® contest from June 13 – June 19, 2021. Your dedication to this program, especially during this challenging time, is inspiring to all.
A special congratulation goes to Elise Yu of Lincoln High School, and Emily Song and Fiona Zou of the International School of Beaverton, guided by mentor Jing Liu, for being awarded the United States Naval and Maritime History: Preserve, Promote and Celebrate prize for their Senior Group Documentary Shaping Communication At Sea: Naval Flag Signaling.
It is hard to believe that May and June are my last two months at ISB. Four months ago, I was just hoping I could host a zoom meeting. I can do much more now (although the staff laughs about all the goofs I still make with technology), which goes to show that you can teach an old dog new tricks! Every day brings new learning, and that is the joy of being an educator. I feel so honored to be part of this wonderful school and community of educators, students, and families.
Take care.
Sincerely,
Janice Adams
Senior Families: Post-Grad Plans
It’s time to start prepping for graduation! Please check with your senior student to make sure they have filled out this Post-Graduation Information Form. This is due by May 7th. We use the information for the commencement program, Senior Awards Ceremony, as well as for sending final transcripts and IB Scores to colleges. Information for the commencement program will go to the printer after May 13th and changes cannot be made after this date; however, we can update all other information in the weeks thereafter. Email Mrs. Muilenburg with questions or updates.
Sophomore Families: Service Resume & Personal Project Due
Students who have completed all the requirements for the MYP certificate will be celebrated on May 20th (time TBD). In addition to completing MYP courses, students are required to turn in a Service Hours Resume to Ms. Velasco. This resume should show how they have completed their 20 hours of Service as Action over the past two years. Due to the pandemic, we have relaxed what counts for service. For this year only, activities such as helping a younger sibling with homework, mowing a neighbor’s lawn, shopping for an elderly family member, etc. all count. The resume was due by April 28th at 4:00pm, but students who missed the deadline should email Ms. Velasco as soon as possible to make a plan for completion as this is a requirement for the MYP certificate.
Since the MYP Celebration will be a drive-thru event and students are missing out on presenting their projects, we are asking each student who completed a Personal Project to also make a 2-3 minute Adobe Spark video highlighting their work. This was presented in Advisory, and instructions can be found here. Students can send any questions about the video to Mrs. Hayward.
