What is going on?
Math: This week we will continue our review and exploration of fractions. This unit will be three weeks long and we’ll start by deciding fair shares then focus on halves, fourths, and eighths using a variety of models. While this seems quite simple, students are sometimes unsure of how to create the most efficient model of a fraction when asked. I will monitor closely and adjust and differentiate as needed.
Reading & Writing: We are continuing our Culture Studies unit this week. Our students have been researching through Culture Grams (online resource), different cultural traditions from around the world. Each day, our class will focus on one country’s customs, fill out anchor charts, read various fiction and non-fiction books and develop an All About book on a favorite culture of study.
Science: This week will be an introduction to natural resources. Students will be learning that the natural world includes Earth materials and will be able to distinguish between natural and man made resources through a variety of learning opportunities. Students will be learning that natural resources come from the Earth and include; rocks, soil, air, and water. Students will be learning that man made resources are materials made from natural resources that have been changed by humans, including; glass, plastic, fabric, lumber, and paper. At home, please continue to support your child by learning the differences between the two types of resources.
Looking ahead to next week’s plans students will be learning the importance of conserving and reusing by creating an in-class project. Therefore, we will be collecting any rinsed containers, bottles, empty toilet/paper towel rolls, etc. for the project that you could spare. We appreciate your donations.
Grammar: We will be reviewing the use of basic sentence punctuation and capitalizing. Our focus will be to use these skills consistently in our creative writing efforts. We will also be reviewing nouns, verbs, and adjectives too.
