A Message from the Superintendent
On Thursday, November 3, Norte Vista High School will host our annual Career Technical Education (CTE) Showcase event for all 8th grade students. Don't confuse CTE for the vocational programs of the past with its concentration on narrow job skills. Today, innovative CTE courses, programs, and pathways provide learners with the knowledge and skills they need to be prepared for college and career, not college or career. If a student does choose to enter the workforce after high school, a CTE experience will prepare them to compete in a highly skilled workforce with a range of skills (trade, technical and professional) for companies and organizations that seek high school graduates that they can train and prepare for career advancement in their industry.
Students in CTE programs take specialized courses in addition to required courses to meet college-readiness requirements. Students in CTE programs also have access to internships, engage with mentors, and practice what they are learning through hands-on projects. Many of our programs feature partnerships with industry as well as with 2-year and 4-year colleges, including dual enrollment.
Known as the College and Career Access Pathways Act (CCAP), Assembly Bill 288 was signed into law in 2015, paving the way for high school students to take college courses to advance college and career success. The profile of the Alvord graduate revolves around future ready students who are prepared to succeed in college and in the workforce, as well as become productive citizens in society upon graduation of high school.
College and Career - Not College or Career
October 19 is Unity Day
Encourage your children to wear orange to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying (no adult should ever experience bullying either, we all know that bullying is not just a school-age behavior, it happens by adults and among adults too). The reality is that revenge due to bullying is the number one motivator for school shootings in the U.S. Wear orange on Wednesday and support bullying prevention.
Tenth Annual Digital Citizenship Week
Every year, during the third week of October, schools raise awareness about digital citizenship and support students in developing the skills they need to safely and effectively use the internet and social media. Parents can learn more about Digital Citizenship Week and how to support their children of all ages here on our digital citizenship web site.
Plan Ahead to Attend the Second Annual Harvest Festival
Red Ribbon Week is October 23 to October 31
In my last few messages I've written about the dangers of fentanyl and how students as young as elementary school age are targeted. While Red Ribbon Week annually brings awareness to the dangers of all drugs, it's our mission to support drug-free schools and students every day through supporting our students' physical and emotional wellbeing. Parents and schools as partners have the power to keep our students safe and drug-free.
Our school facilities safety threat assessments are part of a comprehensive school safety program to prevent violence. Prevention includes an emphasis on early attention to problems such as bullying, teasing, and other forms of student conflict before they escalate into violent behavior. Our Pupil Services team and our Office of School Safety team work closely with our school teams to focus on prevention, preparation, and emergency response.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an example of how our schools adopt a flexible, problem-solving approach to student misbehavior and school-wide behavioral management. The focus is on creating a positive school climate in which students feel like they are treated with fairness and respect.
