Education Foundation Awards Innovative Teaching Grants

On Friday, November 30, member of the GISD Education Foundation circulated the GISD campuses and surprised the 2018 Innovative Teaching Grant recipients. Earlier this fall, teachers were invited to complete applications for a specific project, educational field trip, or a classroom need. This year, 28 grants were awarded for a combined total of $31,402.76! This is more grants and more funds EVER awarded by the Education Foundation. Since 2003, the Foundation has awarded $315,323 to GISD classrooms to expand the educational opportunities for students.

Join the Parent Advisory Committee

At GISD we strive to continuously improve our district through a cooperative effort between our schools, parents, and the community. As a means to provide an avenue for this conversation, Dr. Stewart is currently forming the 2018-19 Parent Advisory Council. The PAC is open to any parent or community member who is willing to provide feedback and input in to what our district is doing well and what can be improved upon. The PAC will meet four times throughout the year, with the first meeting being held on Tuesday, December 11th at 5:30pm at the Administration building, 800 S. Morris St. If you are interested in being a valuable member of this group, please contact Kay Neu at 940-665-4362 or kneu@gainesvilleisd.org.

2018 Christmas Card Contest

GISD held a districtwide Christmas card design contest for the third year in a row. Students from across the district were invited to create artwork for the chance to be on the 2018 GISD Christmas card. Entries were judged at the campus level, and the top three from each campus were submitted to the district office for further judging. One design from each campus was selected to be on the card, with the first place art winning placement on the front of the card and the second place displaying on the inside cover. All five will be recognized at the December Board meeting.

Thank you to all who participated and congratulations to our campus winners!

On Wednesday, our District Education Improvement Committee (DEIC) met for the second time this year. Once again, questions were gathered by the committee from their peers and presented and discussed at the meeting. The other main topic of this meeting was discussion of give 2019-2020 calendar options. We are setting our calendar early this year!

After a thorough discussion of options, the committee narrowed it down to four calendar options, which will be sent to all staff next week for voting. Holidays, testing windows, staff development days, and placement of bad weather days are all a factor in determining the best calendar for our students and teachers.

The DEIC is comprised of teachers, parents, and community members who were nominated for the committee by campus principals.
