june 18 flexible staff day
All teachers and teacher assistants may work a flex schedule between May 16 and June 15 for the staff day on June 15. The flex day applies only to the following groups of employees:
- all teachers whose schedule ends on June 15
- teacher assistants, ISS coordinators, and library media assistants
Security assistants are not eligible because of security needs of the building.
Eligible employees who do not choose to make use of the flex time and do not wish to report on June 18 may choose to take personal reasons leave with approval of the building principal.
Flex time should be recorded on your timesheet similar to MKU time. You will indicate the amount of additional time worked (.25=15 minutes, .50=30 minutes, .75=45 minutes, and 1=60 minutes) with FLEX written in the additional hours column. See Pam if you have questions.

NEW SPECIALIZATION BADGES FOR TEACHERS
The purpose of this memo is to bring your attention to and provide information about a number of self-directed professional learning opportunities for teachers that will be offered through the Department of Teaching and Learning (DTAL) beginning in the 18-19 school year. You may recall that the division launched several specializations options for teachers last school year, a full listing of which can be found on the PGI Sharepoint site. As a part of specialization in Performance Based Assessment (PBA), DTAL first offered a badge in PBA Development, which was well received by teachers this school year.
DTAL is pleased to be adding two additional PBA-related badges for the upcoming school year, PBA Rubric Development and PBA Calibration and Scoring, which are a great next step for teachers who completed the first PBA Development badge. Teachers who have yet to embark on the PBA specialization now have 3 options to take advantage of, allowing a teacher the option of potentially progressing through all 3 PBA badges for the chance to earn a specialization in PBA. Each PBA badge is “stackable,” and completion of all three PBA badges will result in a teacher earning a PBA specialization badge. In addition to the PBA specialization, a badge around Close Reading will also be available.
While there are a number of specialization options listed for teachers on the PGI site, the Department of Teaching and Learning will be sponsoring the following badges/specializations which will be available to teachers starting in September. Teachers may participate in division- sponsored specialization courses and earn professional learning badges in the following areas:
-
Performance-based Assessment (PBA) Development
-
PBA Rubric Development
-
PBA Calibration and Scoring (successful completion of all three PBA badges will result
in teachers earning a master specialization badge in PBA)
-
Close Reading: A 30 Day Series Facilitated by Doug Fisher
By participating in any of the above badge/specialization courses, teachers will be able to develop and highlight expertise in specific priority areas that are in tight alignment with the division's Teaching and Learning Framework and are designed to further progress toward the division’s attainment of goals stated in the strategic plan, Compass to 2020. A demonstration of mastery in these areas, as identified by earning a badge, will be a preferred prerequisite for job vacancies within the Department of Teaching and Learning for coaching, specialist, and/or curriculum coordinator positions. Furthermore, preference will be given to teachers who have earned any of the above badges when applying for curriculum and/or textbook review committees or other DTAL-sponsored committees. Teacher demonstration of mastery leading toward badge/specialization attainment in any of the above areas will also further teacher capacity and can be considered by administrators when determining attainment of the exemplary level of proficiency in the Professional Knowledge component of the VBCPS Teacher Evaluation Rubric.
While these professional learning opportunities will be self-paced and flexible, there will be key submission dates for final products and/or reflections. All of the courses listed above will be housed in Schoology, and registration for each will be completed in Frontline. Specific details regarding course descriptions and submission deadlines are attached and can also be found on the PGI site.
If you have any questions regarding the specializations and badges offered through the Department of Teaching and Learning, please contact Nicole DeVries, administrative coordinator for the Department of Teaching and Learning, at Nicole.DeVries@vbschools.com or 263-1070.
