Happy Wednesday, Panther families!

We are getting close to fall break, and while we are looking forward to some R&R, we are also looking forward instructionally. Staff are evaluating data and implementing math assessments to make sure students are making expected progress. We are also evaluating student and family engagement, and making plans to make sure everyone feels seen, valued and cared for at Penngrove.

Thank you to all those who are following our expectations in the parking lot! We are all aware of the complications of our small parking lot and the corner of two busy two-lane roads, and appreciate all the efforts made to make things go as smoothly as possible. Please remember to drop off and pick up AS SOON AS you pull to a stop at the yellow curb, and then be courteous when letting others back in to the exit lane. This will help keep the line moving.

Last but not least, please turn right out of the lot. We've had some dangerous situations, some close calls, and even a collision lately. The extra 2 minutes of going right is well worth your safety!

Stay awkward, brave and kind!

Question of the week from Principal Harp

Each week, I will be sending out a question with which you will be given the opportunity to engage in a new conversation with your child. We all know how hard it is to draw out responses other than, "nothing" or "fine" when we ask "What did you do today?" or "How was school?" Be sure to use open ended follow-up questions and statements such as "Tell me more about that!" or "What did you think of that?" Please ask your student(s) the question below, share their response with us and make our day! You can submit more than one response! (No need to put names or identifying words.)

Tell me one thing about the math you're learning this week

It's time for a reminder about Adobe Road, entering & exiting the Parking Lot, and general safety.
1. Please DO NOT cross Adobe Road EXCEPT at the two crosswalks. It is so dangerous to dart out, especially with children.

2. When entering the parking lot, take turns. Think of it as shuffling a deck of cards- one car from each direction at a time, in turns.

3. PULL UP in the drop off lane! Stay present & aware- don't make Ms. Tina have to holler at you.

4. The drop off line is for exactly that- drop off. Adults should not be leaving their vehicles. If your child is not ready, needs assistance, or some extra time, please park.

5. Once you hit the yellow zone of the drop off line, your child may exit the vehicle. No need to wait to get to the front. But again, only if they are ready to exit.

6. Be considerate of others! Allow others to back up out of spaces, pull up once you are able in the drop off line, smile at Tina & be a good example for our Panthers.

7. and finally- BE POLITE- TURN RIGHT! Right turn only out of the parking lot while other cars are present. Left turns during busy times cause accidents, and it is just not worth it.

We know the parking situation is tough. But with a little compassion, following the rules and most of all- remembering that our impressionable Panther minds are watching our behavior- we can keep things safe and moving.

One of the goals of PBIS is that 80% of students know our 3 expectations. Ask your student what the three Penngrove expectations are (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible) and see if they can give you an example of each for a particular area. Students have been taught the sign language for these three words- ask them to show you! See the graphic below for reference. Click to enlarge.

I hope your students are sharing their knowledge about Nutrition Facts labels with you while you are at the grocery store! We are studying Nutrition up in the garden. We have been “shopping” in my store and learning how to read Nutrition Facts labels as well as studying MyPlate and talking about heathy eating choices and “sometimes food." Our Fall garden is coming along with some plants being harvested and pulled out to make room for winter plants and our Fall plantings of Kale, Cabbage, Kohlrabi, Basil, Beets, Carrots and Onions are getting larger. I will be continuing to walk around Fridays after school with fresh greens and veggies from the garden to give away to adults on campus.

We are coming up on the Fall Equinox on the 22nd of September and will be learning about how the seasons change and why farmers need to know all about outer space! We will be also enjoying some of our harvest before we head into Fall break.

Thank you all so much for your support with volunteer hours and donations to the garden program. I am committed to making our GEE program the best that it can be! I am filled with gratitude getting to share special moments with students observing the garden, first time tastings and all the wonderful stories about bugs and garden experiences the students share with me. I hope you will take some time as the summer comes to a close to enjoy the outdoors present with your child even if its only for 20 minutes it all counts.

In gratitude,

Ms. Ortiz

Walk and Roll October Challenge!

I know, I know... Penngrove is not set up in the best way for students to walk and roll to school. HOWEVER... I have a challenge for you for National Walk and Roll month! We are setting up a "walking school bus" on October 26th. Students and families can meet at Penngrove Park at 7:45 for TK/K families and 8am for 1-6th grade families, and walk as a group to school that day! Get some friends together to meet, walk and enjoy each other's company, plus get in some steps and fresh air, all while avoiding our parking lot! I'll meet you there and we'll have prizes for students who walk!
