The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of January 22 - 25!
Message from the principal
There is no school for students or staff on Monday, January 21st, as we observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Students begin in Connections on Tuesday, January 22nd, at 8:00am.
As we begin our 2nd semester on Tuesday, this is a reminder that it will be the first day of 2nd semester. Students will start on Tuesday in their Connections teacher at 8:00am for this day only. Starting in Connections allows for students to confirm their 2nd semester schedule on PowerSchool before going to their first class of the 2nd semester. Tuesday will be a Day 1.
For the first time in over a decade, UHS student and staff ended our1st semester after our winter break. Though this change was met with some concerns and adjustments needed to be made by everyone, it helped us to balance the number of days between the 1st and 2nd semesters to a more equal 89 and 90 days respectively instead of 82 and 97 days.
Had we continued with our old schedule, a single semester class like Health would have had three additional weeks in the 2nd semester. This would have created great learning discrepancy for students. I appreciate everyone's flexibility as we made this adjustment to help make learning time equitable for everyone.
The schedule for Tuesday will be as follows (there will be no I.E.S. on Tuesday):
Tuesday, January 22nd:
Connections 8:00 - 8:25
Period 1 8:30 - 9:12
Period 2 9:17 - 9:59
Period 3 10:04 - 10:46
Periods 4-8 As usual for a Tuesday

Information from Dr. Watson regarding Academic Eligibility
Academic Eligibility
Students in Activities that fail a class as identified on their semester transcript are subject to the Scholarship Rules outlined by the Iowa Department of Education, the rules of the Music and Speech Association, and Urbandale Board Policy 510. In general, a failing grade results in a suspension for thirty calendar days from activities. The specific suspension varies based upon the activity based upon the rules set forth by each organization.
Individual students who find themselves in this situation will be contacted by the Activities Office during their season (for those in-season at the semester) or in the first few weeks of their season prior to the suspension period commencing if not in season (i.e a Spring participant will be notified in the first or second week of practice).
For additional information on these rules with specific dates, visit: https://www.j-hawks.com/information/Academics/2018-19_Academic_Information/2018-2019_Academic_Eligibility_Periods or contact the Activities Director, Dr. Watson, at william.watson@j-hawks.com.

Senior graduation and senior pictures

Iowa Biliteracy Seal...Applications being taken now!
On April 17, 2018, Iowa became one of 34 states to offer a Seal of Biliteracy for students who show proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The Seal of Biliteracy appears on a student’s transcript. Iowa legislators recognize the increasing need for biliterate citizens in our workforce. Thus, the Seal of Biliteracy was approved to showcase biliteracy of students to colleges and potential employers.
Urbandale High School is excited to offer the opportunity for seniors to earn a Seal of Biliteracy. Each year seniors will have the option to demonstrate their proficiency through a series of tests. Students need to demonstrate proficiency in two languages to earn the Seal of Biliteracy. Proficiency may be demonstrated on a series of English and non-English assessments. Specific assessments will be determined based on student needs and language(s) desired.
Seniors wishing to apply for the Seal of Biliteracy need to fill out this application by February 1, 2019. Applications should be submitted to the student’s counselor.

Leaving the building after school
After School at UHS
In order to maintain an orderly, supervised environment at UHS after the school day ends, it is important that students who do not have after school activities at the high school leave the building and campus. There is not adequate supervision for students to simply roam the building or hang out with their friends on school grounds.
Parents, we are asking your help in making UHS more secure after school. Have a plan for what your student(s) is doing after school. Make plans for your children to ride a bus, walk, or be picked up from UHS. There is not supervision at UHS past 3:30 on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday and 2:30 on Wednesday and Thursday for students who are waiting for a ride. Students who do not have after school activities will be asked to leave the building by the times stated above.
After school computer hours at UHS
The computer lab in the media center will be open the following times:
Wednesday, Thursday – 2:30-3:30
After evening games and activities
After events, students should vacate the building no later than 20 minutes after the conclusion of the event.
