Key Value Letter: Generosity

Key Value: Generosity
Dear Mill Pond Students and Families,
There was once a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won first prize. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned the farmer’s strategy for growing winning corn. What was it? Simply this: the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors.
“How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked.
“Why” said the farmer, “don’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.”
I believe that at Mill Pond the generosity of our students and staff helps us grow the best corn. The abundance of kindness and consideration that I see shared on a daily basis is paid forward so many times over again that it benefits all of us. Generosity is something that is contagious. When someone feels the spirit of giving it is natural to want to give back. It is so rewarding to come to a place each day where you never know the kindness that may come your way each day.
Earlier this week I saw a student innocently bump into another student, who proceeded to drop their lunch. Both students cleaned up the mess together and approached me to ask what could be done. Another student nearby offered up a part of their lunch and then all of a sudden the whole table was offering to contribute. (We were able to resolve the issue without any student giving up their lunch!) Moreover, it is the intent of actions like this that illustrates how the key to growing good corn is how we treat our neighbors.
Sincerely,
Mr. G
