On Tuesday March 3, 2020 students in Middlesex Community College’s Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math Science spent the day at the MIT Museum participating in hands-on workshops. Students explored the Museum’s Gestural Engineering exhibit and learned the functionality of gears, pulleys, and linkages, in order to build their own working kinetic sculptures.
Elevate program at LHS - a bit more information
I was asked if I could share more information on the Elevate program at LHS. Here is a brief description of the course Elevate I course being held at the FA and Main Building:
• Students receive a highly-engaging guided learning experience which directly aligns with the Common Core State Standards Initiative, the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning Competencies (CASEL) and the Elevate Learning Objectives. High school students are guided through their own personal leadership development within the context of 7 character qualities and 6 life skills. In addition, students are fit with essential teaching, mentoring and leadership skills to become Elevate mentors who deliver lessons of leadership and character to elementary-age students. The course provides a balance of class work relating to the development and use of: (1) listening skills, (2) communication skills, (3) facilitation skills, (4) decision-making skills, (5) leadership and mentoring skills, (6) character and life skills and (7) teaching strategies. By taking part in this course, students are empowered to be leaders in their own lives and agents of positive social change in the lives of others by building long-term life-changing relationships with adults, their peers and younger students.

I just wanted to send a note on a huge accomplishment the students producing the raider report achieved today. Today, during our live morning show, we went to a live shot in front of the gymnasium with an update on a students project. This required a team of individuals to be present at the live shot and a team in the studio to communicate and iron out the logistics. It was a huge success and the students were ecstatic at how well everything went. What many did not see during todays show, was the days of preparation, rehearsal, writing, and planning that went on behind the scenes.

WHAT THE TECH!
Do you want the opportunity to do PD in your PJs? Originally, there was a district wide account for SimpleK12 Professional Development Learning Community, but the district let it go last year. A pilot to bring it back to the high school has been initiated. There are enough licenses for 50 certified staff. Specific staff have already been invited, based on their initial interest but, since some have chosen not to participate, there still might be space for you! Membership includes access to all the On Demand webinars including topics like Google Apps, Learning Theories and Strategies, STEAM, and Personal Enrichment, just to name a few. Here is a link to the full catalog: https://community.simplek12.com/scripts/student/catalog.asp so you can check it out for topics that might interest you. These webinars average 30 minutes each, and are packed with teaching strategies and resources. Many are also grouped into comprehensive courses. Participants are guaranteed access to transcripts for 1 year, and potentially longer if the pilot is successful. These transcripts can be printed to use towards certification, and have already proven to be especially helpful towards ELL and SPED requirements.
If you accept to participate in this pilot, you will be asked to do the following:
-
Watch the 6 SimpleK12 training webinars on how to get the most out of SimpleK12 (about 30-45 min total before the 1st meeting which will most likely occur in May).
-
Read several emails from Malinda throughout the year.
-
Earn “Veteran Rank” by September 1st 2020. This is easier than it sounds (see picture below for requirements).
-
Evaluate whether or not you think this resource would be valuable for all LHS certified staff.
-
Attend 2-3 meetings over the next 12 months - preferably occuring during school hours (note: only 1 meeting will occur before the end of June 2020).
-
Find 1 webinar that you feel would benefit LHS staff, and write a short blurb about it by January 2nd, 2021. This webinar could be a recommendation for all staff or a specific group of people.
If you would like to join the group, please email mpires@lowell.k12.ma.us, so I can email you a link to the acceptance form. This opportunity will be based on 1st come, 1st served.
As always, if you would like technology training, assistance developing and implementing a technology based activity, or problems with your devices, enter a help desk request at http://helpdesk.lowell.k12.ma.us/helpdesk/WebObjects/Helpdesk.woa.
Have a good week!
