Mrs. Elaine Van Leer - Part-Time Library Assistant Extraordinaire
Mrs. Van Leer - Who May Just Be Magical
Here are some of the ways Mrs. Van Leer ensures the library media program is a success:
Circulate and shelve books, including books used for ELA classes
Train volunteers on circulation and shelving
Maintain the volunteer schedule
Provide assistance to students and staff in finding materials
Provide back-up to Mrs. Trahan and STAT
Supervise students who use the library space for quiet study, test-taking, or open browsing
Catalog new materials and add them to our system
Work with Mrs. Roy and volunteers to create eye-catching and interesting displays
Send out email reminders to students about overdue materials
Send overdue notices each trimester to teachers regarding their homeroom students’ materials
Mail home overdue notices to families if necessary
Keep an info board for events happening at the public library
Post a weekly brain-teaser for students and staff to try for fun
Maintain calendar for bookings of the Global Classroom, Maker Space, and main Media Center space
Process student requests for ILL books
Process outgoing requests for ILL books
Submit monthly reports to RILINK about our ILL activity (incoming and outgoing)
Help Mrs. Roy run a variety of reports on circulation, patrons, and the collection
Prepare an end-of-year summary of all BPS District ILL activity*
Conduct inventory and resolve issues that arise from it*
*Did not do these tasks this school year due to extenuating circumstances
Ways Mrs. Van Leer Supported Distance Learning This Spring
Created a How-To tutorial on how to access BMS ebooks and audiobooks
Created ebook-audio book combos for 10 books for ELA students and teachers to use during Distance Learning
Created lists of the collection by genre to use to add category stickers to books when we return to the building
Promoted on BMS Parents facebook group: RIMSBA 2020 self-voting; RIMSBA 2021 nominees; public library teen programs; info regarding returning BMS books
Attended webinars about supporting students and yourself during the pandemic; information literacy and “fake news;” conducting an inventory; organizing Destiny Library Manager; libraries moving forward after COVID; author “takeovers” with Adib Khorram and Rob Buyea (talks about writing process, impact of their stories, etc.)
Cleaned up catalog records:
Created a new circulation type and sublocation for “Class Sets” to separate ELA materials from the general collection
Deleted duplicate patron records (some teachers were duplicated)
Deleted 57 unused call number prefixes
Fixed incorrect Class Set call numbers
Merged duplicate titles
Deleted from the system materials that had been marked lost prior to August 15, 2019
Sent email notices to staff and students with lists of the books they had checked out to help them gather materials to return to BMS
Adapted our BMS Readers program to Distance Learning using flipgrid; curated the responses and videos for use by all BPS elementary students
