Cedar Grove Friday Flash
September 23, 2022
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
Thank you to all the families and staff who attended the Welcome Back Bash last Friday evening. It was so great to connect and enjoy time together as a school community. Students enjoyed the food, games, moonbounce, and a visit to the Book Fair. Many thanks to Mrs. Mahoney and Mrs. Lorey, chairpersons, for organizing this fun event and to Mrs. James and Mrs. Morris for organizing and chairing the Book Fair!
Our first Cultural Arts assembly was last Wednesday (see above pictures of the performance). The program, enjoyed by students and staff alike, featured storytelling through classical Indian dance. Students had an opportunity to interact with the performers and share their understanding and interpretations of each dance. Many thanks to Binnish Mustafa, our Cultural Arts chairperson and the PTA, for providing this wonderful experience for our school.
Great American Photo will be taking individual student pictures on Wednesday, September 28. Students are not required to pay for any pictures before they are taken. All students will be photographed. Families will be able to review proofs and online portrait galleries of their child/children before selecting which photos they would like to purchase. Parents will be able to choose multiple images to create a customized package.
As a reminder, there is no school this Monday, September 26. We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Grade Level Newsletters
Parents, this year we will be sending all grade level newsletters each week in the Friday Flash, rather than having individual teachers send them. Please click on the link to your child's grade level below. Any questions regarding the content of the newsletters should be directed to your child's teacher. Thank you.
Pink Out Wednesdays
Every year we support breast cancer awareness by wearing pink on Wednesdays in October. It is a community event that promotes empathy and togetherness. Our first Pink Out Wednesday will be on October 12. We encourage you to take pictures of your pinked-out students and send them to Mrs. Hirschhorn who will compile all the photos into a video. You may watch videos from previous years here.
Pumpkin Character Decorating Contest!
We will host our annual pumpkin character decorating contest! It's a wonderful opportunity to get creative! Follow the rules and send in your pictures on or before October 21. Mrs. Hirschhorn will create a video from all of the entries! In years past, this has been an exciting community event and we can't wait to see what you all come up with this year!
New High School Football Game Procedures: Shared from Damascus High School
If your family or your children attend high school football games, there will be new procedures for students to enter games, starting this Friday as follows:
- Students of the participating schools will be allowed to attend with a valid ticket and by presenting their student ID or Synergy verification of their schedule. All other school-aged spectators must be accompanied by an adult chaperone - this includes all elementary and middle school students and high school students from other schools - adult chaperones must stay and supervise students for the duration of their stay at the game.
- Spectators should expect to take additional time to gain entrance to events, as school IDs and enrollment are verified at the gate.
- Students and spectators must sit in the stands during the course of the game. While there will be potential gatherings at halftime and postgame, large gatherings will not be allowed during the game.
- There is no re-entry to events. Spectators will not be admitted after halftime.
- Backpacks are not allowed.
- Separate entrances, staggered exits, and additional support and security coverage in high traffic areas will be utilized.
- Inappropriate and unruly behavior at athletic events may result in suspension from subsequent MCPS athletic activities.
- Only student-athletes, coaches, game officials, athletic department staff, and credentialed personnel and media are permitted on the sidelines at contests.

From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Media Specialist
It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of September. It's been very busy in the media center -- book check out and returns; lessons; book fair! Get ready for more excitement in October! In addition, we're ready to put together our FBI Crew. These are media helpers who come to us to prepare the media center for the next day! If you have a fourth or fifth grader who attends KidsCo, then this might be the thing for them! Here's the FBI (media helper) application form! Finally, as always, please bookmark our September Media Monthly and visit it often. It gets updated every Friday!
