4th Grade News

STRIDE ACADEMY
Your students have taken a GAP assessment in STRIDE ACADEMY. This creates math, reading and language arts lessons tailored to your student's needs. Students will be coming home with their log in and school code so they may access this awesome program at home. It can be accessed through any device that has wifi. We would like to see students use Stride from home if possible at least 60 minutes a week. It is a great tool to close any gaps your students may have and push them to the next level in their learning.

What's Up in Math and Science
SNAPTRICITY!
This week we will start to explore how to make a complete circuit. We will pin point problems that will cause a circuit not to work correctly and hook up switches and bulbs to our circuits with our new Snaptricity kits. We are excited for this hands-on lab!
Multiplication
We will continue to work on partial products and the standard algorithm to mulltiply 1 digit times 4 digit numbers and 2 times 2 digit numbers. We will also solve word problems dealing with multiplication.
Fractions
We will review the basics of fractions and work on placing them on number lines. We will talk about "unit fractions" and benchmarks that help us to compare fractions.
Language Arts and Social Studies for this week...

Students will also be working in their small book clubs where they will explore chapter books and work on comprehension skills with their small groups. We are challenging students to read with expression and not like a robot. This would be a great skill to work on with your child. It will truly help with their comprehension of text.

Expository Writing
This week the students will be completing the revisions to their expository compositions. We have been working hard to make sure our leads match the tone of our papers. This week we will be focusing on transitional phrases, supporting details that are not listy, and a conclusion that really wraps up their compositions.
Early Settlers to Texas
During Social Studies this week we will be studying the early settlers to Texas from Spain and England. We will discuss what caused the settlers to make such a treacherous journey and the outcome of their travels.
Guided Reading Levels
Many parents were given their child's DRA (reading) level at their child's conference, and now you are wondering how to shop for or find books that are on their level. Well there are several online resources to help. On the Scholastic website there is a book wizard you type in the title and it will give you the level for many books. However, you do need to select the search for DRA level. There are many different leveling systems and our district primarily uses DRA. Of course not all books will be in there, but hopefully this will help!
