Mini-Society
Reminder that Mini-Society is Tuesday, March 15 from 1:30-2:30 in the Shay Cafeteria. Parents are encouraged to attend and shop the students' businesses. Students need to have a minimum of 15-20 products to sell. They are welcome to bring their things on Monday if they want.
I still need one or two parents to help run the "bank" and make change if the students need it and give money to the parents. Thank you for your support.
Language Arts
- Reading: This week we read a story about Cesar Chavez and his role in helping migrant workers organize for better working conditions in California. Our focus was on drawing conclusions and generalizations in text.
- Writing: This week we continued working on our compare and contrast essay about a Greek myth and an African folktale.
- Grammar: We review prepositions and prepositional phrases. We also wired on relative pronouns and adverbs.
Math
This week students learned about the relationship between factors and multiples. They also used different strategies to determined whether a number was prime or composite. Everyone was excited to start a new internet based program to help with fact fluency. The program, called Big Brainz, allows kids to practice math facts through an interactive game format.
Science and Social Studies
- Science: This week we started a new unit about waves. We also reviewed solar energy and energy transfer and built solar cookers. We're hoping for a sunny day next week to cook some s'mores!
- Social Studies: This week we learned about positive and negative incentives in our economy.
- Emmet County Sheriff Department K9 unit came in to talk to the students on Wednesday afternoon. Two weeks ago we read a story in our reading book about working dogs. Deputy Sheriff Robert Paumade took the time to come in and share his dog with the 4th graders.
Homework
Mrs. Kowalski and I decided to change up the 4th grade homework a bit. We took out one grammar sheet and are asking the students to read a text and respond to a question. The question should be answered on a separate sheet of paper and should be 4-5 sentences or longer. The students should start their answer with a topic sentence and use examples from the text to support their answer.
- Spelling: Spelling list and front and back of the worksheet
- Grammar: one side of the sheet
- Writing: Reading and one question
- Math: Worksheet
As always students can practice comprehension and fluency on Raz-Kids and math problems and math facts on Moby Max.

- Battle of the Books: We have just two weeks left in Battle of the Books and students are doing a great job. Remember students are required to read a minimum of three books to participate in the classroom battle. Most of our students have already reached that goal!! We have just a handful of students that have a book or two to finish!! Keep reading!!
- Student Council Reading Challenge: Be working on the March reading challenge from the Shay Student Council. Remember if you complete all 14 challenges and turn the sheet in by March 30 you can dress up as your favorite book character on March 31.
