Historical Marker at Kealing Middle School

I was emailed this week by Richard Denney , vice chair of the Travis County Historical Commission about one of the many historical markers at Kealing Middle School this weekend. I found out the historical marker was placed there in 1986 in honor of Laurine Cecil Anderson. Anderson was the first president of Prairie View A&M University, which is in Houston Texas. Austin ISD's Anderson High School was originally named after his brother E.H. Anderson and upon L.C. Anderson's death in 1938 the high school was renamed after him.

Principal's Message to Hornet Families for the week of February 21st 2021

Happy Sunday fantastic family members,

Thank you for choosing Austin ISD and Kealing Middle School as your primary educator. This past week was much smoother than last week considering the snowstorm. We found a few additional concerns with the building which led us to beleive we may not be ready to open on time. Fortunately, AISD operations came to save the day. We also appreciate AISD leadership for encouraging a soft return where teachers had an opportunity to plan, reconnect with students, and close out the grading period in a strong way. This upcoming week we look forward to a great week of teaching and learning experiences for our scholars and teachers.

#BEGREATmentality

We are thankful to AISD operations for quickly responding to our facility need this weekend!

Announcements!

21-22 Choice Sheet Information

All students have received information through Advisory last week about completing their 21-22 Choice Sheet (Google Form) in the Counselor's BLEND Course. For current 6th/7th graders - there is a self-paced module filled with elective videos and our full coursebook to review before accessing the Google Form.

For current 8th graders, students are directed to their zoned high school website for individual campus information.

We will continue to work on these in Advisory this week. Counselors will be available everyday (March 1st - 5th) for open office hours from 10:30am - 1:00pm. Zoom link can be found in the Counselor Course as well as in the Advisory Lessons.

Virtual Volunteer for Junior Achievement at Kealing

Junior Achievement work-ready and entrepreneurship programs are being implemented in Kealing's AVID classes though the end of this spring semester. We need ten virtual volunteers to mentor the students through these programs. The commitment is one-hour a week for about six weeks per program. JA will give you everything you need. Please feel free to email emily@jacentex.org and check out the JA website at https://www.jacentex.org/ja-volunteer

Model UN Conference!

Model UN is an opportunity for students to learn about global politics and how to solve our world's problems. You will represent a certain country (this includes any and all of their beliefs on the topic) and work with other delegates to come up with solutions. This year the topics are North/South Korea tensions, coastal pirates, and climate change. There is some preparation beforehand, but it doesn't take very long and we are more than happy to help!

The conference is on Monday, March 29th (you WILL be excused from classes) and the official deadline to sign up is March 7th. If it is past the deadline please email anyakureshi8@gmail.com with your responses and we will still consider you. Here is the sign up form: https://forms.gle/vp2zEcube6PKBHe46

AISD to Continue Free Meals through the 2020-21 School Year

The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) recently announced an extension of current school meal programs through the 2020-21 school year. Through the federally-funded program, all Austin ISD students will receive free school meals through June 3, the last day of school.

For students participating in remote, off-campus learning, free 7 day meal packs will be available each Thursday at more than 40 curbside locations throughout Austin. While Austin ISD plans to continue curbside service as long as needed, meal sites are subject to change as more students transition to on-campus learning.

Curbside meal sites and more information can be found here

Austin ISD COVID-19 Dashboard

Austin ISD is committed to putting health and safety protocols in place that will prevent the occurrence and/or spread of COVID-19. However, we must be prepared to quickly and effectively respond to and communicate a lab-confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19 at a school or other Austin ISD facility.

The Austin ISD COVID-19 Dashboard will be updated by noon each Tuesday, starting the week of Sept. 21. All lab-confirmed positive cases on campuses will be communicated directly to the campus community. Individuals who may have been exposed will be contacted directly and provided information on the next steps, including a quarantine timeline if needed.
