#CelebrateMonday
September 4, 2017
I hope you are find time for a little R&R this weekend. It's pretty brilliant that a 3-day weekend falls so soon after the school year begins. I feel like no matter how prepared I think I am, when school starts the crazy and frenetic pace still catch me off guard! And when the Labor Day weekend draws near, I am thankful for the extra day off so I can try to catch my breath!
This awesome work is truly a labor of love, and it is not necessarily something for which we were fully prepared when we moved to these positions.
When we think about leadership in education, I'm not sure that we fully understood exactly what a labor of love this would be. I mean, how many of us considered the number of Go-Gurts we would be asked to open during lunch, or how many heartbroken adolescents we would have to console? How many of us thought that our jobs would entail cleaning up a flooded room after a pipe burst? Or how many of us considered that we'd have to talk with students about the importance of reapplying deodorant after PE class?
These are just a few of the tasks that we are not necessarily fully prepared for when we enter education (or administration), but engaging in each one of them means the world to the students on the receiving end.
It may not feel like a meaningful task to cut open the Go-Gurt (and why do parents keep sending those for kindergarten students!?) for the one-millionth time, but the student who shares that interaction with you appreciates it more than you know.
You may feel like you have so many other (more important) things that you need to do while listening to the tearful stories of the brokenhearted adolescent after his or her first breakup, but giving that time and attention to that student at that moment is so important to him or her.
Taking the time to help clean up after a pipe burst has many lasting benefits including the opportunity to show students and staff that we all work together here to get a job done.
And helping those students understand the significance of reapplying deodorant after PE has a positive impact on all those around him or her.
To #CelebrateMonday all week long, consider the acts you witness in your daily routine and in the daily routines of your teachers that are part of the labor of love that is education and celebrate those acts when you see them!
And do NOT forget the amazing and lasting impact that your labor of love has on the students you encounter each day! And if you need a reminder, check out the video below! Your labor of love MATTERS!
And do not forget to make this the best Monday of the week!
Cheers!
