Judaism vs. Islam
Michelle Turner
Islam
Islam originated in the Arabian Peninsula. They worship at a Mosque or any place which is considered clean by Islamic standards. Some of their practices are the five pillars: Testament that there is one God and Muhammad is his messenger; prayer five times daily; fast during Ramadan; charity to the poor; and pilgrimage. After death they believe they will be accountable to Allah on the Day of Judgement. They only believe in on God and they believe in the Second Coming of Jesus. They do not believe that Jesus died, they believe that God raised Jesus and he will return before end of time.
Judaism
Judaism originated in the Levant. They worship in Synagogues and the Western Wall of the Temple in Jerusalem. Their practices include: prayers three times daily, with a fourth prayer added on the Sabbath and holidays (Shacarit prayer in the morning, Mincha in the afternoon, Arvit at night, and Musaf is an extra Sabbath service). There are different opinions and beliefs about what happens after death: a world to come, reincarnation (some groups), and unifying with God. They believe God is the one True Creator and he has always existed. He transcends life and death. They deny the resurrection of Jesus. They believe he is a fellow Jew, a respected, learned scholar and he is not mentioned in Jewish texts.
Similarities
Both religions believe:
- in only one God.
- that salvation comes through belief in God.
- that Jesus was not resurrected.
Differences
- They worship in different places.
- Islam prays five times a day while Judaism prays three times.
- Judaism doesn't believe in the Second Coming of Jesus while Islam does.
- They have different Holy Days.
- Judaism doesn't believe Muhammad was a prophet. Islam is based around Muhammad.
- They believe in different prophets.
