The Prophet of the Most High
June 24, 2018
The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
It may surprise you to note that this was one of the first festivals to be included on the Church's calendar. This is one of only three birthdays the Church recalls (Jesus, the virgin Mary, and John, Jesus' forerunner). All other saints are commemorated on their death day. The name given by the angel, John, means "God's gracious gift," and John fulfilled the promise of this name by heralding the arrival of the long-promised Messiah. The song of Zechariah, John's father, is part of the Gospel for this day. It is a canticle which has been long used by the Church, especially in Matins or Morning Prayer. Each part of this four-part song moves us back to remember the continuity of the history of God's people-a continuous line that points to Jesus. Today we remember John, the forerunner, but especially the faithfulness of God, whose plan of salvation came to fruition in His Son. From a priestly family, John's birth was marked by the angel for his special role. In the visit of the virgin Mary to Elizabeth, John kicked in the womb, stirred at the very presence of Jesus. About the year 29, John began to preach repentance and to baptize, fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy.

No Bulletin Left Behind Campaign
Kick-off party on Sunday, 6/24 between services light snacks provided. The campaign will run from July through October 2018 and 8 gift cards will be given away to two random individuals who submit pictures of where they left their bulletin behind.
The Outreach Committee has created a new campaign to use the weekly church bulletin as a channel to share scripture and communicate worship services and events at Victory Lutheran Church & Preschool to our communities. As Jesus told his disciples, if you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. We are the workers of the harvest field with a possible direct impact to our church, an indirect halo effect to his kingdom, or both. Below are some examples of where to share the bulletins:
Libraries Assisted Living Centers Doctors Office
Your Neighbors Gym Day Care Centers
Grocery Stores Public bulletin boards Restaurant Servers
College Campuses Coffee Houses Your place of work
Local events & conferences Hospitals
Community & Senior Centers Public Restrooms
Pray over the bulletins asking God to reach Non-Christians and to win souls for him. If you would like, take a picture of where you left your church bulletin, send it to the email address outreachcommittee@victorylutheran.org or post it to our Facebook page. Whatever you do work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord. You are serving
Let’s make this fun and plant Gospel seeds in our community!

Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Ps. 103: 1-5
