DESIGN THINKING, PBL, & OTHER TINKERING V4.25
Saber Spotlight
St. Gabriel's teachers have been engaging their students with some stellar projects in and out of the d.lab!
Susan Lane and Rose Gibson are introducing their Junior K students to real tools and design as part of building mini-museums, while Alicia Estrello's 3rd Graders are combining literacy and programming with Ozobots.
Meanwhile, Monica Agostini's ELA students have been experimenting with physical computing and Makey Makey - see the video below for an example - and will soon be integrating this tool with Scratch programming.
Tom Marino's 5th graders are applying human-centered design thinking as part of their Social Studies entrepreneurship unit. Last week, inspired by the Creative Mornings "Espresso Shot" event, they pitched their product ideas to the class.
In 8th Grade Science, Mike Scallon's students are prototyping trebuchets and will be testing them soon before fabricating the full-size versions.
To see more of what students have been making, please stop by and visit our first annual School Maker Faire.
See the Community Events section below for details.
Community Events
A major element of project-base learning is providing students opportunities to showcase their work publicly, not just to their teachers and peers, but with real audiences.
With this in mind, our first School Maker Faire is a chance for students to share their learning and hard work with this exceptional community. As an added bonus, St. Gabriel's has been invited to share our student projects at the Austin Maker Faire!
In the Media
The piece below is an amazing overview of the work of Harvard's Project Zero, which focuses on developing "cultures of thinking" in schools across the world, and is an integral part of the SGCS STEAM by Design approach.
