Connors School Scoop
November 3rd, 2021
Dear Connors Families,
Our very short week at Connors was filled with lots of learning activities. Today, students learned about the festival of Diwali and how it is one of India's most significant holidays of the year. Students learned that Diwali commemorates the victory of the forces of light over the forces of darkness. As part of the festival of lights, students made Diya candle holders, read stories about Diwali and danced in their classroom. In addition, students discussed how they could bring light into their community, share acts of kindness, stand up for what they believe in, help others and reach out to new friends. Our 3rd-5th grade students read "Let's Celebrate Diwali", by Anjali Joshi to our Kindergarten-2nd grade students. In the story, Harini shares the Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist Diwali traditions with her class at school.

Diwali Celebrations
Ms. Fleischer's Kindergarten Class
Although it was a short week, there was lots of learning happening in Miss Fleischer and Mrs. Mussara's Kindergarten Class! In honor of Election Day, we listened to the story "Duck for President". After listening to the story, we filled out our own ballots. We analyzed the results and recorded the results by filling out a graph. In our class, Duck won the election! In ELA this week, we focused on all six of our sight words we have learned so far. The class made "a basket of sight words" writing the words on apples and placing them in their baskets. Keep practicing your sight words every day! We are looking forward to another wonderful week of learning next week!
Ms. Rodriguez's Kindergarten Class
This week, students enjoyed earning stars on Raz Kids by listening to and reading books! They practiced tracking along with their finger and even learned how to record themselves reading! We also reviewed last week’s letter “Pp” and sorted words that begin with the /p/ sound and those that don’t in our interactive notebooks. It was a lot of fun learning about Diwali, the Festival Of Lights. Students did a super cool Indian dance, read a story on Epic and answered the quiz questions with 100% accuracy! Then, each student made their very own Diya!
Ms. Vayda's 1st Grade Class
Ms. Januse's 3rd Grade Class Celebrates Diwali!
This week, we celebrated Diwali! We read about the multi day celebration, and students in our class shared what they do in order to celebrate Diwali at home! We then created our own diya's!
Ms. Hall's 3rd Grade Class
ELA: This was a short week, but we still continued to read our core novel and expand our non-fiction skills! Students practiced analyzing illustrations in order to make connections and better understand the text. Students used what they learned to read chapter 2 and analyze all of the useful and important illustrations the author included to help readers better understand slavery in America.
Math: Students used math time to build and practice the skills that we have been focusing on thus far in Units 1 and 2. Students worked in rotating centers that focused on multiplication, division, representing data, and answering two-step word problems.
Social Studies: This week students learned all about the celebration of Diwali! We discussed the holiday’s focus on the idea that good always defeats evil, and light always defeats darkness. Students brainstormed ways that they can spread light in their communities. They also created their own diyas to participate in the celebration and “light up” Connors!
Ms. Schulz and Ms. Rodriguez's 4th Grade Classes
4th Grade learners went on a Virtual Field Trip today to learn about Diwali. They watched a documentary about the history of the holiday and learned about India as they toured famous historical sites. The students were amazed and many want to book a trip to India!
Ms. Ortiz's 5th Grade Class
The 5th grade worked on Symbolism while reading Esperanza Rising. Students were given three objects from the novel (the rose, the zig zag crochet pattern, and the dolls) and students had to find text evidence of the symbolism and then analyze the deeper meaning for each of these items. Students also used the narrative elements we discussed in order to write a narrative story about a funny Thanksgiving event. In Math, students wrapped up unit 1 by completing their unit 1 test. In Social Studies, students made Diwali candle holders that can be put together to create a flower. Students also engaged in an Industrial Revolution Webquest.
ILP with Ms. Barsukova
Students in ILP have been working on identifying Fractions on the Number Line between 0 and 1. Students are in process of finishing up the project called "My Name in Fractions" where they identify the fractions that make each letter of their name, the vowels, and consonants in their name.
In addition, to celebrate Diwali holiday, students participated in the Close Read about Diwali and worked diligently to make a drawing of Rangoli using directive drawing video. Instead of using the colored sand, we decided to use glitter and glitter glue to decorate the Rangoli flower. In 1st Grade students took turns reading the book and colored the Mini Book about Diwali! Students did an absolutely amazing job!
Art with Ms. Capalbo
Happy Diwali! Today in art we learned about the artmaking of Rangoli for the Diwali celebration! We identified the art elements line, shape, color, and pattern in these elaborate sand art creations. These designs are created and placed in front of a family's entrance to welcome fortune, wealth, strength, and good luck. We watched a time lapse of a family creating their Rangoli in front of their home and discussed what it must be like working and creating art with sand. Have a happy Diwali!
Music with Mr. Azzarto
The week of November 1st was filled with some new instruments and some serious Thanksgiving “Music Math”!
In Ms. Fleischer’s class, the students continued learning about instruments that belong to the brass family. Do you buzz or do you blow into a brass instrument? Well, all the kids remembered that a
musician buzzes into a mouthpiece and that sound comes out of the bell of the brass instrument. They also got a chance to hold the trombone, which helped them understand that the bigger the instrument, the lower it sounds. Here is Alessandro getting ready to jam out some cool Jazz
as he properly holds the trombone!
In Ms. Garcia’s class, the students were asked to complete the math questions and figure out how many beats each note was worth. After they identified the note values, they matched the color with the correct note. Re-enforcement of note values is very important to reading Western notation. As they have now learned, all notes are worth a certain amount of beats and that music is made of sound that lasts a specific amount of time. Here is Hudson with his beautifully colored math worksheet that matched each note value.
Mr. Favino's P.E. Class
This week in PE we started a new unit which fit perfectly with the cold weather; football! Football marks the beginning of our team sports unit and we had a great time outside practicing some of the skills that go along with it. As an introduction to the unit, our students had the objective of properly carrying the ball and learned the skill cues of throwing. To reinforce the skill of throwing we participated in the game jackpot, where teams compete to throw more balls into a target than their opponent. Students did a great job and there was a lot of progression in our short week. Enjoy the long weekend!
