Reading and Writing

We will be reading and writing poetry this week. Students will learn new vocabulary, identify rhythm and rhyme, compare poems, and learn to ask good questions about what they are reading. In writing they will write their own poems modeled after our examples.

We will take our November iStation assessment on Tuesday.

We will be learning how to solve word problems involving joining, separating, and comparing sets within 20 with unknowns as any one of the terms in the problem.

This week will focus on "separate change unknown"

For example:

There were 17 sleeping cats. Some woke up and went outside. Now there are only 13 cats sleeping. How many went outside?

17 - ? = 13

I had 15 cookies baking in the oven. I gave some to my grandma and now I have 6 left. How many did I give to my grandma?

15 - ? = 6

I went to the park with 15 pieces of candy. I gave the same amount of candy to each of my two friends and I took one piece. I have 6 pieces left. How many did each of my friends get to eat?

15 - ? = 6 *with multiple steps

We will solve these problems using number lines, part-part-whole mats, counting up/down, and ten frames.

Science/Social Studies

We will learn about about the smallest rock - clay. Then we will explore and compare soil the rest of the week.

**Look for our class "Moon Book" to be coming home in the next few weeks.
