Social Studies Weekly
Year 5 Volume 8 ~ October 23, 2017
This week's shout out goes to Anderson Mayes at Carver. He has embraced the use of Nearpod in his classroom, which has helped him incorporate quick formative assessments. He is using these formative assessments to address student misunderstandings on the spot. Authentic engagement runs high in his class!
Please note: If you feel your average may be really low and you are not sure why, check to see if you have a) graded the constructed responses or b) when you graded constructed responses you gave zeros to students that did not take the benchmark.
AM 1 and AM 2 Saturday Collaboration Session
The next AM1/AM2 Saturday Collaboration session is November 4th. It will be held at Panera on Cloverdale from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Attend for an hour or all three hours, it is up to you. And, you will get CEUs for attending!
Summer Travel to Germany
The Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOP) offers social studies teachers the opportunity to travel to Germany during the summer. The application is due in January and the cost is minimal. Check it out.
Primary Resources for AM1 and AM2
Khan Academy
World History
It seems like we are due for another Age of Enlightenment. Oh, to dream! This week, we are moving into Revolutions: Scientific, Religious, and Political. There is a reading on the Scientific Revolution and a hexagon activity for the Political Revolutions in PSL.
The Unit 6 M/C questions are in the PSL Library. U7 should be ready by next Monday.
Civics and Economics
Before moving into Economics, try reviewing Unit 5 with this Bump-a-Word! And, why not wrap up Government by having the students determine which Democratic Principle is the most important with this Bracketology.
The U4 M/C questions are in the PSL Library. U5 should be ready by next Monday.
American 1
It will be finished this Wednesday. But, here is a sneak peak. There is a minimal amount of copying needed (one class set of hint cards and a front/back student sheet). Teacher instructions are included. Try it out by starting with this page. A huge shout out to Alexis Callender for her hard work and creativity.
American 2
When looking at WWII, our focus is on its impact on the politics, economy, and culture of the United States. This activity provides a look at minorities in the war. And, this article examines African American Patriotism during the war.
To read the article, you will need to be registered with Gilder Lehrman, it is free and well worth the access to all their goodies!
Message from Melissa
Congratulations, you have made it through 1/4 of the school year. Whew. Yes, there are still 4 days left, but still!
You are such hardworking and dedicated people. I appreciate all you do.
Please let me know if there is anything you need.
Have a great week and enjoy grading the mountains of end of quarter papers. (sigh!)
