Featuring...You!
Have a great idea to share? Come across something that would interest everyone? We want to feature YOU and your amazing ideas!
It can be something as simple as a link to a video teaching a wonderful activity. Send it to jonnakano@iusd.org or terencengo@iusd.org and we'll feature it in these periodicals!
In Mr. Caldwell’s Physical Education class at Sierra Vista it’s very important to him that his students understand the “why” behind the reason they exercise. Once a student understands the health benefits of jogging and exercise, how it will help them in their life and ways they can implement exercise in their lives outside of school they “buy-in” more and tend to give more effort and enjoy the activity.
During our Cardio Friday lesson last week each student jog/walked for 5 minutes as we are slowly building our Aerobic Capacity and then they sat in groups of 5 to read a short article on “Children's Brain Development is Linked to Physical Fitness, research finds” to learn about the hippocampus.
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/09/100915171536.htm
Each student in the group is expected to read and contribute to group conversation about the article. I then ask guiding questions about the article and finish up with a short lecture on my thoughts about the article. It’s a great way to incorporate more informational text in PE, academic language and vocabulary, and implement student centered learning opportunities.
Physical Education is more than just movement and it’s important to add in health and nutrition topics to encourage lifelong health and fitness.

P.E. Methods
Classroom Management - One Whistle, Two Whistles
In this tip, we follow the saying "A teacher's voice is for instruction, not management," meaning save your voice for what's important.
As a warmup, we start by walking around the basketball courts.
One whistle = Freeze or Go (depending on if they're moving or not)
Two whistles = Ready Position. Ready position is facing the middle, knees slightly bent, hands up, and feet shoulder width apart. Think of it like a defensive basketball position.
When I blow the whistle for them to go again, I'll hold up a sign with a locomotor movement. They follow that locomotor movement as they continue to move around the court.
You should have them freeze (one whistle) before doing the two whistles. However, you don't have to do two whistles after every freeze. A freeze can just be an opportunity for them to catch their breath.
Extension: After "ready position," give a stretch or exercise to do.
App of the Month - Move It
Move It is the random brain break & exercise generator that is a Chrome extension and an app as well (links are below).
When on, it automatically pops up with a quick brain break idea. No "snooze" here - it won't go away until you press "done." Don't worry, it won't know whether or not you did it :).
So why Brain Breaks?
Well, Brain Breaks are a quick and effective way of changing or re-focusing the physical and mental state of the learners in your group. They are also a useful tool for students to use to help activate, energize and stimulate their brains. Research indicates that brain breaks also improve students’ concentration and relieve stress.
So with that being said Introducing the mobile app version of “Move It”, which is based on the popular 7 minute workout trend. At the end of the day It’s a simple way to get students moving with equipment free exercises designed to get the blood flowing and the wiggles out.
Speed Stacks
It's a great indoor P.E. activity and something anyone can do. Their website has Stack Tube, which hosts some easy to follow instructional videos and amazing record breaking performances.
Since it is a heavy initial investment, they offer a purchase program by selling stack sets to your students to earn equipment for your classroom (like Book Clubs). They also offer a loaner set if you just want to try it out on a large scale.
Did You Know?
The Longest Sports Game Short of Cricket
Despite running about three hours, actual playing time in a Major League Baseball game is under 18 minutes.
According to the Wall Street Journal’s own calculations, the 17 minutes and 58 seconds of action includes “balls in play, runner advancement attempts on stolen bases, wild pitches, pitches (balls, strikes, fouls and balls hit into play), trotting batters (on home runs, walks and hit-by-pitches), pickoff throws and even one fake-pickoff throw.” Take all those away, and the amount of time that is pure action on the field is about 5 minutes and 47 seconds.

Your piano and guitar players who may not prefer or choose P.E. have the dexterity to do well in sports stacking.
Fire Up Your Feet
Fire Up Your Feet Rewards Active Families and Schools (K-8 schools in select regions)
Schools across the nation are increasing physical activity and improving health and wellness with the Safe Routes to School National Partnership's Fire Up Your Feet program. Fire Up Your Feet is an encouragement program to promote active living and healthy lifestyles for K-8 students, families, and school staff. The goal is to inspire kids, parents, teachers, and the community to incorporate physical activity into their current everyday routine. Fire Up Your Feet provides $95,000 in cash awards during its Fall and Spring Activity Challenges to increase physical activity before, during and after school. Elementary and middle schools in sponsored regions (California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Metro Atlanta, Michigan, Southern Nevada, Oregon, Nevada, SW Washington, Virginia, and Washington DC) can earn cash awards for tracking any and all types of physical activity, any time of day, and participation is free! Please mark your calendar for the Fall Activity Challenge, scheduled for 10/1/16 -10/31/16.
Parents, guardians and school staff can sign up for the free program anytime at fireupyourfeet.org. Then, during the month of October, participants log their physical activity using the online activity tracker. Awards are based on the percentage of participation at your school, so the more people who sign up and track, the better your chance of winning awards!
Let's Move! Active Schools
First, you'll want to fill out the school assessment tool. Then, from there be on the lookout (we'll let you know as well) of funding opportunities. They're short grants you write and there have been a lot of programs out there.
So far, in this year alone, we've secured funding for a school set of flag football equipment, a entry for each student into Nike's Marathon Kids (running) program, and access to the Activity Works program.
Little to do for a lot of access!
