National Merit Scholarship Commended Students
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The qualifying test is a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year. The student’s responses to items in the PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet that are specific to the National Merit program entry determine whether the individual meets requirements to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Approximately 50,000 students out of 1.5 million entrants with the highest PSAT/NMSQT scores (critical reading, mathematics, writing all combined) qualified for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. In last week’s newsletter, CB West's Semifinalists were announced. This week, I am pleased to announce CB West's Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to the following CB West Students:
Benjamin Aunins
Andrew Bukowski
Noah Clark
Isabel Cleff
Joshua Hochuli
Aaron Moskoff
Katherine Quinlan
Colleen Smith
Brya Vaihinger

September 11th Remembrance
In honor of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11th, 2001 and the subsequent military campaigns and in the spirit of the call to service, not just military service but everyday service to humanity that was fostered out of such tragedy, CB West High School hosted an assembly on September 11, 2013 led by the president of the Travis Manion Foundation, Ryan Manion - Borek. Mrs. Manion – Borek spoke to the entire CB West student body about sacrifice, honor, service, and service to the community.
CB West Wins Award!
The following message is read by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Officials to team coaches and captains prior to each event:
PIAA requires all registered sports' officials to enforce sportsmanship rules for coaches and contestants. Actions meant to demean opposing contestants, teams, spectators and officials are not in the highest ideals of interscholastic education and will not be tolerated. Let today's contest reflect mutual respect. Coaches please certify to the contest officials that your contestants are legally equipped and uniformed according to the rules and PIAA adoptions. Good Luck in today's contest.
I am very pleased to announce that CB West High School was recently awarded the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's Good Sportsmanship Award for the 2012-2013 school year. Congratulations CB West!
The ESCAPE Club
We would like to introduce CB West's ESCAPE club. The ESCAPE club focuses on Extending Students’ Capabilities Academically through Projects in Engineering (ESCAPE). The ESCAPE club meets once a week. Club members get together to learn more about engineering and the different types of engineering careers and interests. We also promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) integration into our school by finding commonalities amongst classes. We also mentor younger students from Lenape and Doyle with our own engineering activities. Rockets and micro RC racetracks are only two of the activities used in this mentoring program. If you have more questions about ESCAPE, drop a line to Mr. Taylor at jtaylor@cbsd.org. The first meeting will be from 2:30 until 3:10 PM on Thursday, September 26th in Room C-131.
