Manipulative Monday
Why use manipulatives?
- Manipulatives provide a way for students to manipulate objects in order to form a concrete understanding of mathematical concepts.
- The TEKS specify using manipulatives in grades K-5.
- They make learning fun and engaging for students and reduce the amount of worksheets in classrooms.
MANIPULATIVE OF THE WEEK: PLACE VALUE DISKS
Place value chips (disks) are non-proportional models that can be used once students have a solid understanding of our place value system. These easy-to-manipulate disks provide hands-on practice for developing number sense. Color-coded according to place value, the foam disks allow students to visually track what happens when they regroup numbers in both addition and subtraction, to develop strategies based on properties, reinforce traditional algorithms, and build understanding of the meanings of mathematical operations and other topics such as rounding.
