News You Can Use
November 2, 2021
First, in cooperation with the JRMS PTA, JBHS PTA, Easton PTO and the Mark Twain Library, the RES PTA presents 'Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age' on Thursday, Nov 4 at 7:00pm followed by a hosted live discussion with Documentary Filmmaker and Physician, Delaney Ruston. Don't let the title fool you, this movie applies to all aged children and anyone with questions about the impact of screentime.
Second, don't forget to make your voice heard this week by stopping by the Redding Community Center to VOTE on Tuesday for our town leadership! This is a great opportunity to create a family civics discussion and teach your student(s) the importance of democracy!
Finally, the RES PTA is excited to announce the return of grade level, parent-led virtual meet and greets! Last year's chats were so successful that we have decided to bring them back. These casual, hour long chats are a wonderful way to get to know fellow parents in your child's grade. Would you be interested in leading a Zoom call for your grade? Please email RESPTA4Kids@gmail.com to learn more!
Jennifer Weissauer - Grade 4 Teacher
I was born and raised in Milford, Connecticut. I graduated a few years ago from Southern Connecticut State University with my degree in Elementary Education. I recently moved back to my hometown of Milford after spending the last two years in Greenwich, Connecticut where I co-taught third grade at Greenwich Country Day School.
3 fun facts About You:
- I have traveled to Cape Cod almost every summer since I was born.
- I have a huge sweet tooth, especially for anything chocolate!
- I have a ten year old black lab named Maddie.
Why did you choose teaching as your career?
I chose teaching as my career because I not only love working with children, but I love being a part of the learning process each and every day. I love getting students invested in and excited about their own learning. I get excited by making connections with students and finding ways to integrate their lives into their learning.
What excites you the most about the upcoming school year?
Meeting a new group of students to grow with this year! I am also very excited to be joining the R.E.S family and work alongside passionate educators.
Register Today: Screenagers: Growing Up in a Digital Age
Registration Required (Click here or anywhere on the picture to register)
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.
In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
The screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Dr. Delaney Ruston, physician and filmmaker.
This evening is brought to you in partnership by the Redding Elementary School, John Read Middle School and Joel Barlow High School PTAs, Easton K-8 PTO and the Mark Twain Library.
The program is virtual and registration is required. Registered participants will receive an invitation and link on the day of the program. Include your cell phone number on the registration form and receive one text reminder, approximately 30 minutes before the program begins. Click here to register.
