Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
January 19th, 2020
From The Assistant Director
CDS Community,
Warmth returned to the building this week as our students recommenced their classes following a long winter break. It brought me great joy to hear the students talk about their breaks with beaming smiles. It always amazes me how quickly we are able to get back into a routine. Term 3 has officially began!
This week our boys and girls basketball teams played friendly games against Dwight School of Seoul on Wednesday. Coach Monette is preparing both teams for the upcoming tournaments that will kick off in just a few weeks! Please join us at the end of the day on Wednesday for our home game against the International Christian School of Uijeongbu.
We also sent the CDS Forensics team to Yongsan International School of Seoul on Friday (pictured above). Congratulations to Minju Kim (class of 2020), who finished 3rd in oratory, and great job to all the other finalists and participants. This is turning out to be one of our most successful years under the guidance of Mr. Gomez and Ms. Stant!
On Friday we welcomed parents to campus to discuss our approach to behavior and BehaviorFlip, the new behavior software we will be rolling out in February. Please make sure you see the information posted below and that you get your account properly set up. Students will be getting set up over the next few weeks as we slowly transition into this new system.
The next two weeks will be shortened as we head into the Lunar New Year break. Have a great week!
All the best,
Jason Musselman

Students Become The Teacher In PE
In this video, Jessica and Suhyeon teach their peers about Cross Country. With both partaking on the cross country team this year, they were extremely excited to share their passion for running by teaching others how to run. Setting up various activities for their peers to learn about running, Jessica and Suhyeon definitely are natural born runners, and have the potential to make excellent HPE teachers! Great job Jessica and Suhyeon!

Exciting Things Ahead In Spanish IV
In Spanish class IV, we have started the year talking about daily life objects, their characteristics and what they are for. In this Unit, Students will be required to learn a lot of new vocabulary to be precise in their descriptions. Vocabulary represents one of the most important skills necessary for learning a foreign language. It is the basis for the development of all the other skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, speaking, writing, spelling and pronunciation. That means that students will need to practice new vocabulary throughout the lessons to remember it and integrate it into their knowledge. This will allow them to have access to more specific themes and topics and express and exchange concrete information among themselves or with other native speakers. Alongside the learning of new vocabulary, Spanish IV students will be working to establish the habit of speaking only Spanish during class time.
This Term 3 we have introduced a motivational element for the students to be more constant when communicating only in Spanish during class time. For each session, each student may put a piece of lego inside an empty pot if they have only spoken Spanish throughout the whole lesson. When the pot is full of lego pieces, a treat will be awaiting for them.... What it will be?

Parent Information Session: Introducing Behavior Flip
Friday, parents from the Middle and High Schools were invited to join us in the Small Theater to hear about the schools shift in how it deals with positive and negative behaviors. The presentation also covered a new piece of software that will help clearly communicate with parents and students, track behaviors and help students develop positive habits of mind as they become reflective and ethically responsible individuals. This new system is called BehaviorFlip and we will be fully implementing it in February.
Were you unable to attend the session?
Are you completely set up on Behavior Flip?
- If you can not locate the set up email that was sent again on Friday, please fill out this form and a new email will be sent.
Thank you to all parents who were able to join us during this session. Please stay tuned for more meetings in the future and if you are interested in being more active in our community please reach out to the High School Assistant, Jinsun Choi (jchoi@daltonschool.kr).

2020 International Youth Leadership Conference Application
On behalf of the Korea Council of Overseas Schools (KORCOS), we are excited to invite your school to participate in the 2020 International Youth Leadership Conference, or IYLC, being held on March 7th, 2020.

The 2020 International Youth Leadership Conference hopes to bring together over 200 young people to work on developing leadership skills and to encourage them to bring back the ideals of community service to their respective communities. The lessons, speeches, and workshops in which the students will participate will all focus on this year’s theme: "Driven by Purpose: Making Room for the Unimaginable". The keynote speakers will speak to the students about their experiences as youth leaders and about their involvement in working to improve the issues facing their communities. Students will also have a chance to present their projects and share their stories.
A call for presentations will be out following selection.
